  1. "@nasaadmin's initiative could catalyze fresh research and discussion within the astronomical community, potentially leading to proposals that challenge or refine the @iau_org criteria. At the same time, it risks being seen as a distraction during a period when many fear for the future of space science funding."

  2. Happy to see the statement on #universityrankings by the International Association of Universities #IAU, the largest and most international university network: iau.global/news/iau-note-on-ra. Sort of proud to have played a role in that. Moving away from rankings, step by step. I look forward to seeing similar statements from #LERU, #TheGuild, #AURORA, #YERUN and others. Solidarity among institutions is crucial amidst authoritarianism and commercial capture.

  3. "The mean apparent magnitude of Amazon Leo #satellites is 6.28 based on 1,938 observations. For spacecraft in their operational mode, 92% exceeded the brightness limit recommended by the #IAU for interference with research, while 25% distract from aesthetic appreciation of the night sky. The reflective characteristics are similar to Version 1 #Starlink spacecraft."

  5. A message from Lidia Oskinova, President of the IAU commission G2 Massive Stars:

"Everybody is welcome to join an on-line seminar on December 1st (Monday!) at 16:00 CET

Title: What Stars Are Made Of: Celebrating One Hundred Years of Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin's Revolutionary PhD Thesis

Speaker: Floor Broekgaarden (University of California San Diego)

    rediris.zoom.us/j/6313376939?p

A century ago, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin's PhD thesis, Stellar Atmospheres, transformed our understanding of the Universe. Famously described by Otto Struve as "the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy", Payne-Gaposchkin's work revealed that stars are composed primarily of hydrogen and helium - an insight that overturned the prevailing belief that stars shared Earth's composition.

We invite you to celebrate the centennial of this landmark achievement and to reflect on the courage, creativity, and intellectual clarity that defined Cecilia's science. [...]"

  6. Message from the International Astronomical Union #IAU:

IAU Hands-On Workshops - Call for Proposals for Workshops in 2026

The IAU calls for applications to organize workshops under the IAU Hands-On Workshops (I-HOW) initiative. These workshops aim at training early-career scientists from developing countries in accessing, reducing, and analysing the vast amount of data available in astronomical archives across the world, and using them for their research projects. Proposals to organise one of these workshops shall be submitted using the application form provided on the website by email to one of the members of the I-HOW Steering Committee.

The deadline for applications is December 31, 2025.

More information on the characteristics of the initiative, the procedure and selection criteria for workshops, and a link to the application form are available at: iau.org/Iau/Iau/Science/Traini

From there, the data travels down the Cerro Pachón mountain, through #SouthAmerica, and around the world to international data centers. Within minutes ⏱️, potential #asteroid ☄️ detections are processed and reported to the #IAU’s Minor Planet Center.

  11. 🚀 Oh joy, another interstellar rock is floating by, and the International Astronomical Union is throwing a party with more acronyms than you can shake a telescope at. 🎉🌌 Their endless maze of links and databases will have you questioning if the real #discovery isn't the third object, but the first hint of organization. 📚🔍

Many of the brightest stars have names passed down through ancient cultures. This image shows 25 of them in true color with their IAU-recognized names. From Sirius (“the scorcher”) to Antares (“rival to Mars”), each star tells a story.

Gemäß #IAU ist die Form der Umlaufbahn wohl derzeit kein Kriterium:

"A planet is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit."

  15. BTW, I sent a message to the #IAU executive and asked them to think about how to secure critical science data infrastructure and databases. Not sure, they can do much on short notice, but I hope there will be more strategic planning. We will need redundant services and mirrors around the world. #astrodon #astronomy

  17. In August, the International Astronomical Union (#IAU) General Assembly was held in Cape Town. As the first time the meeting had come to Africa, and as one of the largest meetings for the international astronomy community, we knew we had to go hybrid.

Our team at @futuremeetings created a full virtual venue that was accessible via web browser, smartphone and #VR, in addition to broadcasted talks and Slack channels.

Here's how we did this (Nature Astronomy article): rdcu.be/d5qPD

  18. Just improved the #IAU available public domain structured data on #wikidata

Passed from 70 universities to 452 identified & documented members.

  19. Dear geodesists, astronomers, and astrophysicists: Does any of you know of some publication that explicitly reports the expression for the metric in a Geocentric Terrestrial Reference System (GTRS) or in the more specific International Terrestrial Reference System (ITRS)?

Various publications (eg doi.org/10.1086/378162) and textbooks (eg doi.org/10.1017/CBO97811395074) report and discuss the metrics for the Geocentric Celestial Reference System (GCRS), but not for the GTRS. (Even though it seems to me that the expression should be formally identical, as the off-diagonal timelike components take care of rotation).

Cheers! (Sorry for spamming borderline hashtags.)

  21. As athletes gathered in Paris for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games, the "Olympics of Astronomy" convened half a world away. At the International Astronomical Union's 32nd General Assembly, dark skies were on the agenda. Read about astronomers' involvement in the dark skies movement and how related concerns were top of mind at this year's event.

  22. The XXXII General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) ends today in Cape Town, South Africa, closing out the first flagship meeting of the #IAU to take place on the African continent: iau.org/news/pressreleases/det - recordings of numerous sessions that were webcast live remain available on the conference website.

  23. I was checking out the video of the #ARISS contact at @astronomy2024 and stuck around for a very inspiring talk by Dr. #maejemison about the #100YSS project.
