    Fortunately, the Joint ALMA Observatory (and the ALMA Partnership) is not a monoculture, so not all computers run Windows, but macOS and Linux as well. Still learning if some Windows computers for some control systems might be at risk in our observatories, and maybe other observatories…

  2. Resilient versus brittle systems:

    7.4 Mw earthquake just in the vicinity of the ALMA Observatory: after a small initial scare, things keep working as normal (we might need to look at our hydrogen maser, though).

    Single software update from a vendor that we don't contract: affects our email and messaging provider (Microsoft 365), degrades the operation of the entire observatory.

  4. Today is my second year anniversary since I joined the Joint ALMA Observatory as JAO Development System Engineer! Can't believe how quickly time flies… and we've done an extraordinary amount of work in these 2 years!

    The cyberattack sadly also affected our newsletter archive, so I cannot point to the nice entry that they published just one month after I joined.

  7. Brains have the alpha waves, computers have their clocks... and radio telescopes have hydrogen masers (essentially, radio-wavelength lasers) to keep both accurate timing and frequency, which are essential for radio inteferometers such as ALMA to work.

    This masers live at 5000 m high at the Chajnator plateau, so the work itself is challenging!

  10. This goes well beyond what was expected from ALMA: for the first time, astronomers have been able to observe a disc around a young star in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a neighboring galaxy. It’s the first time such a disc has ever been found outside our galaxy, and is identical to those forming planets in our Milky Way.

  15. This is an excellent example of the ALMA capabilities, and what the ALMA partnership can achieve when we work together. This is the highest spatial resolution datacube ever produced by ALMA, at 5 milli arcseconds, using Band 10 at around 950 GHz, and the most extended configuration of around 16 km baselines.

    A lot of technical ground was broken in order to achieve this result, so in the future it will be easier!

Thanks to the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), of which ALMA is a major contributor, the EHT collaboration has been able to describe for the first time how light from the edge of M87's supermassive black hole spirals as it scapes the extraordinary gravitational field by looking at the polarization of its radio emission.

  19. ALMA captured, for the first time, the accretion flow _towards_ a supermassive black hole. Identifying this flow had long been a challenge, due to the small scale of these regions and the complex gas motion near galactic centers. They saw where the foreground molecular gas absorbed the bright light coming from the Active Galaxy Nucleus, and evidence of its movement.

  20. Another great ALMA image: a group of researchers led by ProfessorXX studied the triple system IRAS 04239+2436 on the radio signals of sulfur monoxide (SO) and studied the arms generated in that kind of interaction, and compared them with simulations, and the agreement was fantastic.
