Fortunately, the Joint ALMA Observatory (and the ALMA Partnership) is not a monoculture, so not all computers run Windows, but macOS and Linux as well. Still learning if some Windows computers for some control systems might be at risk in our observatories, and maybe other observatories…

Resilient versus brittle systems:
7.4 Mw earthquake just in the vicinity of the ALMA Observatory: after a small initial scare, things keep working as normal (we might need to look at our hydrogen maser, though).
Single software update from a vendor that we don't contract: affects our email and messaging provider (Microsoft 365), degrades the operation of the entire observatory.

Protecting ALMA’s skies Whitepaper: a study of the risks posed by radio frequency interference (RFI) to ALMA today and in the near future, from both ground-based and space-based sources of radio emissions. The paper identifies the vulnerable points eof the observatory, and discusses and evaluates potential mitigation measures.

ALMA, as part of the Event Horizon Telescope, is unveiling a new image of our Milky Way's supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, in which strong magnetic fields can be seen…
The most exciting part is that this hints to a jet that would be hidden from our vantage point in our galaxy… but imagine that! We might be like M87, just at a smaller scale!

Celebrating 11 years of ALMA inauguration!

Our colleagues even recorded a video of the process, and the reasons for this, including VLBI!

Brains have the alpha waves, computers have their clocks... and radio telescopes have hydrogen masers (essentially, radio-wavelength lasers) to keep both accurate timing and frequency, which are essential for radio inteferometers such as ALMA to work.
This masers live at 5000 m high at the Chajnator plateau, so the work itself is challenging!

This goes well beyond what was expected from ALMA: for the first time, astronomers have been able to observe a disc around a young star in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a neighboring galaxy. It’s the first time such a disc has ever been found outside our galaxy, and is identical to those forming planets in our Milky Way.

ALMA captured, for the first time, the accretion flow _towards_ a supermassive black hole. Identifying this flow had long been a challenge, due to the small scale of these regions and the complex gas motion near galactic centers. They saw where the foreground molecular gas absorbed the bright light coming from the Active Galaxy Nucleus, and evidence of its movement.

Do you want to collaborate in the system engineering efforts of the ALMA Observatory? We have a position for you!
She (or he) will support the System Engineering (SE) processes related to the different ALMA development projects, and thus I will have to collaborate with this person as part of the SE team.
More details, including position requirements, at our recruitment website.

This is a very neat result: using ALMA, a team surveyed 39 massive cosmic clouds, or "star nurseries”… and found in the order of ~800 stellar seeds… and 99% of them lacked the mass to give birth to massive stars. It seems that core density might be more critical than mass for high-mass star formation than previously thought.

This is a great talk about how Science Platforms will change the way data reduction is performed in radio astronomy…

At ALMA, we don't have a Science Platform, but we're looking at them to see if they might be required for the WSU era…

I gave a talk as part of the SKAO Speaker Series about the ALMA Development Program, which in essence was a recap of ALMA so far, and I think it turned out quite well.
I'm also experimenting with the Fediverse for video, and managed to publish it through PeerTube in my (informal) ALMA Observatory channel, hope you enjoy it!
