  1. @breadandcircuses @elizkolbert #HurricaneOtis should have been the lead story in every news outlet. Going from Tropical Storm strength to Category 5 in 12 hours is breathtaking -- and makes preparation (or evacuation of highly populated areas) close to impossible.

Here is a YouTube link to the complete audiobook (and illustrations!) of THE LITTLE PRINCE read by Kenneth #Branagh. It works here in Ireland, hope it works wherever you happen to be when you click it, and whoever you happen to be when you decide to visit or revisit this astonishing book.

What a masterpiece for all ages.

  3. @LynnBrenner @braveryofsf sounds amazing. I'm sorry I missed that.

Agree with you on #Branagh's Henry V. I would put his #Hamlet a notch above, but I know I'm probably in a minority there.

Bullseye on the audience coming to hear a play back then. This is one of the reasons that #Shakespeare works so very well on radio in my view.

Come to think of it I don't think I've ever seen a live Hamlet

    ((Edited to fix a mistranscription))

  4. I thought I had seen all the extra features that connect to #Branagh's 1997 full-text #Hamlet, but either my memory is deteriorating faster than I anticipated... or I never saw this fascinating documentary on the making of the film. I choose to believe the latter.

  5. @BreadAndSalt Isn’t it a good thing that people feel better about the result? #Alaska went through a process that allowed voters to express their true preferences and produced a result that reflected those preferences. A majority expressed a preference for #Peltola. Begich and Palin were both able to run without either being labeled a spoiler. The process was better for democracy that it would have been without #RankedChoiceVoting. It didn’t fail.

  6. @breadandcircuses And nary a mention at all in North American legacy news media - beyond that slag in The Economist - on the #beyondgrowth2023 conference in the European Parliament.

IMHO the blindingly obvious truth is that earth cannot support 70B+ farmed animals & we can end Animal Ag by Eating Plant Based or Eating Vegan or choosing the EAT Lancet global diet!

Being vegan is as good for humans’ health as it is for animal welfare. There is no nutritional need for humans to eat any animal product; all our dietary needs, even as infants and children, are best supplied by a meatless diet.. bing.com/search?q=Being+Vegan%

Here in Germany there have recently been stricter recycling quotas. What happened next?
Plastic recycling is almost always downcycling. Suddenly everything is made of plastic. Totally crazy. For example forest banks. Protective films against weeds. Carpets made from recycled plastic bottles are advertised on television. Your own living room becomes a landfill and you pay money for it.
All just so that plastic can continue to be produced.

Re: sentences 1&2, I agree. Many cos need to be fiercely regulated, taxed, sued, and sanctioned. Some need to to be nationalised.

    Re: 3 - a perspective:

'The premise behind #consciouscapitalism is that businesses should operate ethically while they pursue profits...serving all stakeholders, including their employees, humanity, and the environment. They shouldn't limit the impact of their achievements to just their management teams and shareholders.'

The only change we've seen is record profits and record new projects.

While #canada is pretending to do better, they just completed the #tcEnergy #costalGasLink - more than $40BN and against thousands of permanent demonstrators.

$40BN could create aprx 8,160 wind turbines & assoc. infrastructure.

Instead it will export #fossilGas #methane for generations.

They're about to destroy a wetland reserve in #alberta.

Have you heard of the oil reserves off the #gaza coast?

    > “The modernity project does not define humanity. #Humanity is much older. It’s too late for modernity to succeed but it’s not too late for humanity to succeed.” Here he turns to #indigenousCultures: “For hundreds of thousands of years, they survived and did quite well without causing the sixth #massExtinction.”
“There isn’t a single Indigenous package,” he says. “Each is tuned to its [particular local] #environment, and they vary a lot. But they have #common elements: humility, only taking what you need from the environment, and the belief that we can learn a lot from our ‘our brothers and sisters,’ that is, the other animals and plants who have been around for much longer than us.”

True, that. #AlexCarey gave some major examples in _Taking the Risk out of Democracy_ eg documents.pub/download/managin

It is however possible that democracy enables capitalism and further exploitation unless you have a well-informed public and universalist value set to start with; and democracy itself requires a basis in relative equality. #MilitaryIndustrialComplex

Hollywood often leads the way on social issues by showing us the way things COULD be.
Maybe the spate of tv series (True Bood, Walking Dead, Last of Us, Revolution & Westworld) is “teaching” us scenarios for post-apocalyptic human survival. So far, there hasn’t been a series where #climatechange caused the breakdown of societ (the one movie that stood out for me was Water World.)
