Cathryn McArthur is the main offender, with breathtaking lies such as:
- Ms McArthur said customers had been using the product at no additional cost. The total cost of the project was $6.48 million, which included a $2.73 million contribution from the Queensland government.
This means taxpayers have already footed the bill for part of it, and customers will be charged by the gas company for the rest of the cost.- "This [Gladstone] project is a real-world demonstration of the potential of renewable gas. It's here, it's real, it's viable and it works."
It's not viable without government hand-outs. And she should know the laws of physics would disagree with pumping hydrogen through through existing pipes into homes.- "It is a 10 per cent blend but you've got to start somewhere, and hopefully one day we will see that at 100 per cent."
No. Just no. The gas company might be trying to put 10% hydrogen into the pipe at the factory, but due to leakages, not all that hydrogen makes it to the other end of the pipe. And there is no way in hell people will be cooking with 100% hydrogen in domestic kitchens. Again, that's not how physics works.- Ms McArthur said the company had planned and costed for minor modifications to its existing network which would allow them to distribute 100 per cent green hydrogen.
Cathryn McArthur is wrong again. For this to work, the gas company will need to replace their entire distribution infrastructure -- every pipe, pipe-fitting, valve, sensor, and gas-meter. Then you replace your home appliances for cooking, heating, and hot water.It's greenwashing by the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) to prolong the use of fossil gas in Australia. They're not serious about tackling climate change. They're using Green Hydrogen and "carbon neutral" as a smokescreen to keep pushing their pollution until 2050.

Far from 'saving' the climate, it really looks like fossil-fuelled data centres are running climate-denying racist text generators for right-wing billionaires.
I found a new dataset that lays it all out pretty nicely: as bad as the generative AI data centre panic-build is, Musk is the worst of a bad bunch by a good margin.

@MelissaBenyon Yes, without key pieces of context for that very misleading final quote:
“This [North West Shelf] project is subject to those reforms, which means this plant is required to bring their emissions down each year and reach net zero by 2050 under the safeguard mechanism.”
Context: by "their emissions", the (unnamed) government spokesperson does *not* include the >4b tonnes of CO2 emissions that will result when the gas extracted from the project is burned (called 'scope 3 emissions' in technical jargon), and is only referring the (far smaller) emissions that result from the extraction process itself. However, most readers of the article are unlikely to be aware of this crucial distinction and so miss the verbal sleight of hand at play.
Also missing: even these latter emissions are very likely underestimated by current Australian government methods of accounting for gas extraction, which are not based on the latest research into the scale of methane leakage that occurs during extraction, processing and transport of #FossilGas.
Also also missing: the safeguard mechanism allows #Woodside to 'reduce' 'their emissions' via dodgy #CarbonOffset scams that frequently fail to do anything like what is claimed on the tin.

It was a little strange talking with some of the #Australia focused climate/energy groups for this @thejapantimes story.
They really wanted to focus on #Japan, and not #China - despite the latter being the main driver of #LNG growth and the country signing the most long-term deals with #Australian #fossilfuel companies.
And since I published the article, only the #Aussies haven't responded or shared the piece.

This week, the freshly re-elected #Albanese Labor government scandalously approved a forty-year extension on the operational life of the gas hub, a move that not only threatens the priceless petroglyphs, but represents permission for #Woodside (the massive gas company that basically runs the state of Western Australia) to profit off a #CarbonBomb that will, once extracted and burned, add somewhere between four and six billion tonnes of climate-wrecking ocean-acidifying carbon dioxide to the active carbon cycle. The cumulative climate pollution from the life of this one project will thus considerably exceed the sum of Australia's projected national domestic emissions for the next decade or more.
Of all the legacies of this Labor government, this decision (alongside giving the green light to dozens more coal and gas projects) will ultimately be the most impactful. The carbon released for the short-term profits of a wealthy few will contribute to massively disrupting and degrading the habitability of the planet for everyone, continuing to shape life on Earth for at least the next forty thousand years.

It should be common klowledge to people installing heating systems but obviously its not, so in case you have a #fossilgas #heating system: The condensation water is corrosive and will eat away #copperpipe. If the water is flowing through copper pipe, check for corrosion to avoid #waterdamage. There was a big puddle on the floor... The copper pipe is gone and replaced by a plastic pipe. While I was dealing with this mess anyway, the condensation water pump was cleaned from all the "copper mud" and the wiring is now held in place with zip ties. #diy #repair #homeowners

In reality, practically all hydrogen made today is extracted from fossil fuels, or is made from water by electrolysis that's powered by a non-renewable source of electricity.
Some people talk about "Blue hydrogen" and claim they're cracked the secret of making it in commercial volumes at a price that's competitive with renewables, but they're not being honest with you about the cost or the quality of their product. Proponents claim that coal — such as Victoria's incredibly dirty, low-quality, high-pollutant brown coal — can be transformed into "Brown Hydrogen" or "Black Hydrogen" by capturing the carbon liberated during the hydrogen extraction process using Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Same goes for "Blue Hydrogen" that's extracted from fossil gas.
They're sorta correct, in the sense that you can get out hydrogen. But if you blink you'll miss seeing where the Carbon goes. By then, they'll attempt to scratch off the label to rebrand their dirty hydrogen as "Green Hydrogen".Herein lies the scam: they're saying is can be done cleanly. The problem is that they're using CSS as part of the process. It would be nice if CCS worked at an industrial scale at any price, but it doesn't. Countless millions of dollars have been poured by governments around the world into CCS pilot-plants at fossil fuel companies. The fossil fuel companies have all pocketed the money and failed to produce results.
Scratch the surface of any hydrogen-bro, and you'll find a hydrocarbon-bro who's deliberately propping-up the unsustainable coal/gas/petrol industry or is an unwitting fool who's science-illiterate.
