  1. TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus tablet now available in the US for $249

The TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus is a mid-range Android tablet with one stand-out feature, TCL’s NXTPAPER 4.0 display technology that offers an anti-glare, paper-like viewing experience.

First introduced during CES in January, the NXTPAPER 11 Plus is now available from Walmart for $249.

The tablet features an 11.5 inch, 2200 x 1400 pixel IPS LCD display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, a 120 Hz refresh […]

  2. TCL 60 Xe brings NXTPAPER display technology to North America later this year for $199 and up

TCL has been selling tablets with its glare-free NXTPAPER display technology in the United States for a few years, but the only phones with NXTPAPER screens that have been available so far are two models that went on sale last year through wireless carriers Spectrum Mobile and C-Spire, months after those phones had already gone on sale in other markets.

Now TCL says it’s preparing to launch its first NXTPAPER phone designed for the North American market. The TCL 60 Xe NXTPAPER 5G will be available in Canada this May for $199 and up, and it should launch in the United States later in 2025.

The smartphone features a 6.8 inch FHD+ anti-glare display with dynamic refresh rates up to 120 Hz and an optional “Max Ink Mode” that switches to black and white for a more paper-like reading experience. TCL says you can get up to 7 days of battery life when using the phone as a sort of eBook reader in Max Ink Mode (although that’s probably not all that realistic if you plan to switch between modes and use your phone for other activities as well).

Other features include 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, triple 50MP cameras on the back of the phone, and a 32MP front-facing camera. TCL hasn’t revealed the processor, Android version, or how many years of software updates user can expect yet.

But given that this phone is expected to sell for $199 and up, I’m not sure that any of those things will be dealbreakers for most users.

TCL says it’s also partnered with Microsoft to provide some unspecified AI applications to users.

  3. TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus features a glare-free NXTPAPER 4.0 display

The TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus is a tablet with an 11.5 inch display featuring a 120 Hz refresh rate and up to 550 nits brightness. It’s also the first tablet to feature TCL’s NXTPAPER 4.0 display technology, which the company says offers a more paper-like viewing experience than ever thanks to hardware and software improvements.

NXTPAPER displays are LCD screens with a matte texture that reduces glare, blue light filtering, and other features. TCL says version 4.0 uses “advanced nano-matrix lithography” in the etching process for better display clarity, and the company is also adding “AI-driven Smart Eye Comfort Mode” and “Personalized Eye Comfort Mode” technologies to version 4.0, which is said to be able to adjust color, brightness, sharpness, and other settings for eight different scenarios.

Like virtually every other hardware company, TCL is also baking other AI features into the tablet. There’s a NXTPAPER Key on the tablet that you can press to bring up a set of AI Tools for features like Text Assist (for rewriting content, translating text, or providing summaries), Writing Assist (for generating text based on a prompt), Google’s Circle to Search feature, and support for generating real-time subtitles for videos or real-time translation of voice, text, or text in images.

TCL hasn’t announced full details about the tablet’s specs, pricing, or availability yet. But we do know it’ll support touch and pen input, and has a “2.2K” resolution display.

More information should be announced closer to launch.

  4. TCL’s first smartphones with NXTPAPER displays are now available in the US (with limited carrier availability)

TCL’s NXTPAPER technology offers a glare-free viewing experience that the company says is more paper-like than the glossy screens that you find on most modern smartphones and tablets. Up until now the displays have mostly been used in tablets, but now the first two TCL smartphones with NXTPAPER displays are available in the United States. Sort of.

After unveiling several new smartphones with NXTPAPER displays earlier this year, the TCL 50 XL NXTPAPER 5G and TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G budget phones are now available for purchase in the US. But you can only buy them from wireless carriers… and not the carriers you may be expecting.

    TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G

You can pick up a TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G phone from Spectrum Mobile for $150, while the TCL 50 XL NXTPAPER 5G is available from C Spire for $200.

Spectrum Mobile is a mobile virtual operator that relies on a mix of Verizon’s 4G and 5G network and Charter’s WiFi hotspot networks. It’s theoretically available nationwide, but when I entered my address in Philadelphia there was no option for service at my location, even though Philadelphia should have coverage according to Spectrum Mobile’s map.

Anyway, that means I cannot buy the TCL 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G, since it’s not sold as a carrier unlocked device.

could theoretically buy the TCL 50 XL NXTPAPER 5G from C-Spire, which allows me to add it to my cart. But, again, I’d have to sign up for a C Spire service contract, because the phone’s not available unlocked.

    TCL 50 XL NXTPAPER 5G

Still, maybe this is a first step toward making phones with glare-free displays available in the North American market and if they sell well in this limited context maybe we’ll see more purchase options in the future.

  5. TCL expands its NXTPAPER 3.0 tablet lineup, announces pricing and availability

TCL’s NXTPAPER 3.0 display technology offers a paper-like viewing experience on tablets with a full-color LCD display. Unlike E Ink displays, you can see millions of colors at high refresh rates. But NXTPAPER displays are less shiny than even most matte LCD displays, offering a more comfortable, glare-free viewing experience.

  6. TCL introduces NXTPAPER 3.0 glare-free tech, along with TCL NXTPAPER 14 Pro and Tab 10 NXTPAPER 5G tablets

TCL’s NXTPAPER technology is designed to provide smartphones and tablets with a glare-free viewing experience that TCL says is more paper-like than a typical LCD display. It’s not exactly E Ink: these are still backlit LCD displays. But the upside is that, unlike E Ink, NXTPAPER can show millions of colors and high screen refresh rates.

  12. To this day I'm convinced that by far the best way to do concurrent programming with #threads (beyond graphical programming languages like #Labview, where concurrency is natural) is that used by #Tcl

In other words each thread is created with its own sub-interpreter. Each has its own context, not shared. Information is passed by messaging (which the receiver receives in their own event loop). Channels moved (not shared) explicitly.

This massively reduces race conditions and other nasties.
