Samsung poinformował, że w bieżącym portfolio firmy znajduje się już ponad 20 modeli telewizorów wykorzystujących technologię Quantum Dot.
Rozwiązanie to, odpowiadające za precyzję odwzorowania barw, stanowi fundament nie tylko flagowych serii Neo QLED, ale jest również kluczowym elementem konstrukcyjnym w telewizorach OLED koreańskiego producenta.
Technologia, którą Samsung rozwija od 2015 roku (debiut w modelach SUHD), polega na zastosowaniu mikroskopijnych kryształów, które pod wpływem światła emitują barwę o ściśle określonej długości fali. W modelach Neo QLED i QLED źródłem światła są niebieskie diody LED, a warstwa kropek kwantowych odpowiada za uzyskanie szerokiej i stabilnej palety kolorów.

Badania przeprowadzone przez firmę SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance) potwierdziły, że kropki kwantowe w telewizorach Samsung są wolne od kadmu. Według analityka Rossa Younga, nowe modele M4 MacBook Pro wykorzystują technologię Quantum Dot, w której Apple zastosowało folię z kropkami kwantowymi zamiast czerwonej folii fosforowej KSF, co pozwala na uzyskanie żywszych i dokładniejszych kolorów.
Young wyjaśnia, że wcześniejsze modele MacBooków Pro korzystały z technologii KSF, która nie wymagała toksycznego kadmu typowego dla kropek kwantowych i była bardziej ekonomiczna. Już w 2015 roku Apple rozważało technologię kropek kwantowych dla MacBooków Pro Retina, ale zrezygnowało z niej właśnie ze względu na kadm.

Obecnie dostępne są opcje Quantum Dot bez kadmu, które, jak twierdzi Young, oferują lepszą gamę kolorów i płynność obrazu niż KSF. Folia KSF wzmacniała kolory, szczególnie odcienie czerwieni, lecz folia z kropkami kwantowymi zapewnia jeszcze dokładniejsze odwzorowanie barw i szerszą gamę kolorów.
Technologia Quantum Dot jest stosowana w zaawansowanych wyświetlaczach od lat, między innymi w produktach Samsunga i Sony, takich jak ekrany QLED.
