So I watched Sinners and I really don't get what the hype was about.
I didn't hate the film, but it's not a film I would care to watch again.
I think what was lacking for me was interesting characters and antagonism. The first hour showed a kind of community solidarity, but dramatically I found it flat. The twins didn't come across like hardened criminals to me, and there was generally a lack of conflict, a lack of personal flaws, a lack of engaging characters.
Having the same actor play both twin brothers meant they lacked a brotherly interaction so this meant I didn't really feel the drama between them.
As for being a horror or a vampire movie, this film is lacklustre. Not scary, not particularly original in vampire terms, not adventurous.
It's a movie that doesn't really fit into a specific genre. It's part social drama, part, musical, part vampire movie. It reminded me a little bit of both From Dusk Till Dawn and O Brother Where Art Thou?
The music sequences slipped a little too much into the music video genre to the point where they tend to get a bit silly.
There's also a KKK subplot, but as with the other storylines, they are minor plots and come across as after thoughts, without punch and impact.
That's my main problem with it: lacklustre.

So #Draft2Digital have introduced a crap tax for authors whose books don't make at least $100 a year.
It's because of the influx of #AI garbage flooding their service.
So, thanks to AI garbage, self-published authors might have to pay a crap tax until their sales improve.
Looking on the bright side, it does give writers an incentive to get people to buy their books.

CW: The Alibi Spoilers
I've been reading some of Daphne du Maurier's short stories and they are quite good. But I always get a sense that I'm missing something, or what I read isn't actually what happened.
Du Maurier never quite gives it to you straight. Things are said, things are alluded to, but you are often left feeling you haven't been given all the answers.
The Alibi is one such story. It's casually dark, with Anna Kaufman tying her infant son up all the time, and it is full of surprises with a potential killer suddenly finding an unexpected passion for painting.
But the end, when the man confesses: I'm not entirely sure what happened. I read about a man renting a room, taking up painting ... but maybe none of that happened.
Because he didn't notice Kaufman was pregnant. And why confess to something he initially wanted to do, but didn't actually do?
One reading is he has no alibi, and cannot provide proof of innocence. Another reading is that he feels guilty and his intention to commit murder is as good as committing it because he lied and hid his true intentions.
But another reading is that none of what we're told actually happens and what he is accused of is the actual crime he committed.
