  8. Cool finding from Max Kreminski’s talk: people who used the Oblique Strategies card deck for inspiration came up with more diverse ideas than those who used ChatGPT. #bangbangcon

  9. With all the buzz about #hitem , these Oblique Strategies cards also provide a tempo

  10. From Max Kreminski at #bangbangcon: Humans are worse at ideation when they use ChatGPT, compared to Oblique Strategies.

    The paper he coauthored: arxiv.org/abs/2402.01536

    Projects he talked about:

Blabrecs: beat the classifier at making up nonsense English-y words. mkremins.github.io/blabrecs/

Blabwreckage: start with either a real poem or complete gibberish, then "wreck" it into something vaguely language-shaped. mkremins.github.io/blabwreckag (I don't think you can provide your own seed? At least, not without hacking the Javascript?)

Savelost: remove one letter at a time from a sentence, attempting to preserve meaning. (I'm curious how a human would do at this task in comparison.) barrettrees.com/savelost/

  11. Just published a new production diary for The Mechanics of Mysticism! Go read it:

(Or TL;DR is I will complete production on July 31 and move on to mixing, but there's a lot more to it for the curious.)

A Box of Ideas by Stephen Emmerson from Timglaset.
it’s a box of 99(?) cards each with an idea for a ‘book of poems’

  13. Hacked the firmware on a #geekmagic smallTV and got #esphome #homeassistant running on it - wrote new software that serves up quotes from #therules by #sistercoritakent and#johncage #obliquestrategies by #peterschmidt and #brianeno and rules from the notes on the studio walls of my partner to make special birthday present for her - ‘mouseTV - 192 inspirations by artists for artists’

  14. For context, I have long used various #oracles, #GenerativeTools and other, similar resources as a source of inspiration and structure. I have a #DiceGame I created to determine all the basics of a sing: key, tempo, etc. I use Eno's #ObliqueStrategies constantly. And of course in #modular I use stuff like #TuringMachines and the #rungler all the time. This let me use a similar approach with titles/themes.

  15. Extending a look at some reusable solutions in #musicGames.

This one is extremely rule-light, and usually to find within #experimentalMusic. Examples include #Signs and #Images by #PeterBrotzmann, or #Etudes by #SharonGal.

There is even a relatively famous adopted child of this category: #ObliqueStrategies, a card deck which was not designed or intended for live musical #performance, but many times have been used like that.
