My dearest Martha,
I miss you dearly. War is hell, and the enemy’s numbers seem immeasurable and teeming with devils. Last week, our supply line was broken and ammunition was running low. I love you so much. We were forced to fashion a rudimentary trebuchet and hurl slices of Grandmother Lilly’s cake at them. Amazingly, it caused more carnage than our rifles and cannons combined. Those on their side who survived retreated with great haste whilst howling unimaginable sounds. Saints be praised! I long for your soft alabaster bosom. Please send more cake.
Love,
Alexander
