The California Scrub Jay family were pecking our Hosui Asian pears, for food/water and/or to attract ants for food, so here’s our harvest. Fortunately, they’re sweet for Asian pears and they’re a reasonable size #HomeOrchard #AsianPears #Yarden

I have a compulsion to let new-to-me weeds grow in my cultivated areas. Maybe this is an American Bugleweed (Lycopus americanus)? It has square stems, so definitely mint family. I’ll investigate more later. Flower buds are there, so I’ll let it bloom. #Yarden

The juvenile California Scrub Jays were out this morning feeding in the elderberries! Just look at those freshly minted faces! #Yarden #CaliforniaScrubJay #NativePlants #Fujifilm

Drat. Our tree rejected these two avocados. To the compost they go. Seven remain on the tree. #HomeOrchard #Yarden

This is one of our resident scrub jays grabbing a peanut #CaliforniaScrubJay #Yarden

It’s that time when nectarines are ripening. Here are a few we have so far kept safe from bugs and birds (one is suspect though). These are the largest fruit the tree has ever produced. Last year they were slightly larger than plums #HomeOrchard #Yarden

Here’s our resident scrub jay patiently waiting & closely watching for their daily morning allowance of peanuts. Their less brave partner was perched high on the tree #WesternScrubJay #Birds #Yarden

The two avocado trees (type A & B) are in full bloom & the bees are going to town. Meanwhile, the two oranges, ceanothus, poppies, and sages are flowering. It’s a lovely but intense smell out there 🤗 #Yarden #HomeOrchard

Today the yellow-skinned New Century asian pear is in full bloom. It is just in time to help pollinate the brown skinned Hosui asian pear, which is at the end of its bloom. The New Century asian pear tree wants to be a cherry tree. #BloomScrolling #Yarden #HomeOrchard

After over a year of being fallowed (b/c life), our crop rows are now dressed with compost & fresh drip tape deployed. In a few weeks, planting our seedlings of peppers, tomato, eggplant, & holy basil will begin #Yarden #Gardening

Now blooming: Type-B “Bacon” Avocado tree… I think this is the male flower. We also have a Type-A “Mexicola” Avocado but it isn’t blooming just yet. When the “Bacon” has male flowers open, the “Mexicola” will have female flowers open and vice versa. Avocado tree flowers are neat. #Yarden #BloomScrolling #Avocado https://ucanr.edu/site/uc-master-gardeners-san-luis-obispo-county/avocado-unique-fruit

The western red bud is a magenta flowering beauty. I’d love to know what the moths sense of it at night #WesternRedBud #Yarden #NativePlants

Moths are night pollinating our western redbuds right now. This is the first time I’ve noticed them. Super cool. #Yarden #NativePlants

Yesterday, Manzanitas, Daffodils, and just barely visible on the left, sage, show their spring colors. These daffodils were volunteers so the bulbs either came in with the mulch or a previous home owner planted them and later they got smothered by a lawn. #Yarden #BloomScrolling

Woo. That was a lot of weeding around my front yard native plants. I feel accomplished and now ready for spring. The bees currently give ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ to our manzanitas and sage will flower next #Yarden
