  1. This is my style of native gardening. I call it "Chaos gardening" although I think it's more proper to call it no-dig gardening.

When we first moved in, 6 years ago in August, I started this garden with a fresh patch of clay soil. It was used as a tomato garden that they lined with plastic to kill the weeds. After years of getting cut down by deer and groundhogs and uninformed lawn care people, I've finally found a rhythm. I've been allowing the garden to fill in and I weed sparingly around the plants. I weed enough to let in sunlight but not enough to draw unwanted attention.

Below are some examples of plants that had been eaten to hell last year (and some this year) but continue to grow in spite of it.

Does anyone else garden like this?

  2. Our cultivated native California grapes have a bumper crop this year. The house Northern Mockingbird pair will be very pleased this fall. And there should be enough for us to make a delightful syrup that goes well with vanilla ice cream #NativeGarden #Grapes

  3. I think this sphinx moth had just pupated since it wasn’t in any mood to fly off. I disturbed it while weeding a clump of native California fuchsias (I’ve been busy gardening before upcoming travel) #SphinxMoth #NativeGarden

  4. These are really smart ladybugs feasting on pesky oleander aphids that are in our milkweed #Ladybugs #Milkweed #NativeGarden

  5. It's baby anole season, which is basically the time of year I stalk every baby Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis) to try and take a million photos. They must all think I'm really weird. This little one is hiding behind the leaf of my Button Bush (Cephalanthus occidentalis)

  6. The Two-spotted Longhorn Bee (Melissodes bimaculatus) is another one of my frequent garden visitors. You can see a male in the middle of a Showy Evening Primrose Oenothera speciosa) and a female hovering close by Lemon Beebalm (Monarda citriodora.)

  11. #Introduction
So I am new to Beige Party, but not new to the Fediverse. I decided it would be prudent to have a 2nd account for when my other instance is going through “shenanigans.” But I also thought it would be nice to have a place, on this here #Mastodon, where I could maybe have a little respite from the overwhelming seriousness of life. So this account will be about silliness and #whimsy and #art and #knitting socks and #crocheting colorful blankets and planting a #NativeGarden and #BloomScrolling and favorite #tv shows and #movies and #writing and the poetry of #SongLyrics.
I live in the #Midwest with my husband and my son in a #MidCentury house where we desperately run to fix the breaking or broken or falling apart thing before the next thing breaks or falls apart. (We have grand plans for this house which includes #chickens and gardens and #compost heaps, but so far the only thing we’ve done is paint the den chartreuse.)

  12. I've seen a lot of folks recently posting photos of their #monarchbutterfly caterpillar enclosures and most look like the enclosures are indoors.

This is a #PSA to help get the word out (please boost!):

Indoor raised #monarchs are more likely to develop and spread disease to wild populations, AND are significantly less likely to successfully fly south for the winter.

"Being exposed to an indoor environment with artificial light, constant temperature and top choice of milkweed provided by their captors they do not develop the environmental cues needed for pre-migratory behaviors."

Please please do your part to help boost populations the way nature intended, with planting milkweed and doing what you can to protect food sources monarchs need, fully outdoors. Plant #native (to your area) nectar sources and please spread the word to others so their efforts benefit the ones we're trying to save.
