El motor de reproducción multimedia modular del ecosistema libre
El desarrollo de herramientas para la reproducción de contenido multimedia en sistemas operativos basados en Linux cuenta con proyectos históricos que establecieron las bases de la modularidad en el software libre, siendo xine uno de los ejemplos más representativos. Lanzado originalmente en el año 2000 por Günter Bartsch, este programa se diseñó bajo una arquitectura dividida de forma estricta en dos secciones independientes: un motor interno encargado de procesar los datos de audio y video, conocido como xine-lib, y una interfaz visual o capa de usuario que permite interactuar con los controles de reproducción en la pantalla. Esta estructura modular permite que diferentes desarrolladores construyan sus propias interfaces gráficas utilizando el mismo motor de fondo, garantizando estabilidad y ligereza en el consumo de memoria del equipo de cómputo.
La ventaja de este reproductor radica en su capacidad para procesar flujos de datos multimedia de manera interna y sincronizada mediante subprocesos, lo que evita desfases entre el audio y la imagen incluso en computadoras con recursos de hardware limitados. A diferencia de otros programas de la época, xine incluyó soporte nativo para la navegación interactiva de menús de discos DVD, decodificación de archivos codificados en formatos comunes de la década de 2000 y compatibilidad con tarjetas aceleradoras de video de la época, todo ello sin requerir software comercial restrictivo. El proyecto se mantiene bajo la Licencia Pública General de GNU, consolidándose como una pieza de software fundamental para entender la evolución de la reproducción multimedia comunitaria antes de la llegada de los estándares modernos de reproducción web.

@dff I've been a regular user of #xine and #vlc, but later and for many years mplayer.
Recently I switched to mpv, a "more modern" mplayer, compatible with the 'old mplayer' but with a faster paced development and new features, particularly useful for streaming use cases. #mpv is the new #mplayer :-)
