Auch nicht den afrikanischen #Weissbauchigel.
Laut einer Umfrage der Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung erfüllen nicht einmal 30 % der Weißbauchigel-Halter die vorgegebenen Mindestmaße an das Gehege. Auch erfüllten nur 37,7 % der Tierhalter die festgelegten Fütterungskriterien. Oft sterben Igel in menschlicher Obhut frühzeitig, was ein Resultat der nicht artgerechten Haltung sein kann. Haltungsfehler sind laut BLE mit 74 % als Ursache für Erkrankungen benannt.
Ebenso resultiert die enge Zucht nach bestimmten beliebteren Farbvarianten bereits in einer immer weiter ansteigenden Inzuchtrate, welche Erkrankungen mit sich bringt. So gibt es als Resultat das „Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome“ (#WHS) – eine Erkrankung des zentralen Nervensystems, das sich durch fortschreitende Lähmungen und charakteristisch wackelige Bewegungen äußert. WHS endet für die Igel nach 6 -15 qualvollen Monaten immer tödlich.
