Many thanks to the Global Policy Forum, a student club at Westlake High, for inviting me to speak on civic engagement. I was VERY encouraged to hear so many informed and relevant questions on topics critical to our daily lives – including climate realities, wildlife and open-space protection, fire prevention, and infrastructure maintenance, among others. Thanks especially to club president Rishi Sikh for putting together today’s session.

Hundreds of students and parents turned out this morning for another great walk’n’roll event at Wildwood Elementary. Walking and riding to school are great ways to get exercise and have been shown to improve academic performance.
Thanks to all who showed up, including all the first responders who handed out stickers as kids arrived at school.

On a beautiful morning, a huge crowd of Acacia Magnet School students and parents turned out for the Ruby Bridges Walk in honor of Black History Month.
When she was 6 years old in 1960, Ruby Bridges’ parents volunteered to have her be the first African-American student to attend a segregated public school in New Orleans.
Despite threats so serious that she required the protection of US marshals, Ruby calmly walked past the haters all year to get an education, setting an example for generations to follow. (1/2)

Kudos to the Acacia Magnet School community, CVUSD team, TOPD, and city crossing guards for staging such a well attended Walk’n’Roll event this morning!
Principal Dennis Carter, CVUSD trustees Lauren Gill and Bill Gorbachev, and TOPD personnel greeted dozens of students and parents and joined them on the walk to school.Walking or riding a bike is a great way to get to school, and improves student performance as well.
