#MollyKinder, a #researcher at the #BrookingsInstitution, predicts a “#messymiddle” period of #AIdisruption, where most #jobs survive but losses are concentrated in high-paying, coveted jobs. She argues that this period will be politically and economically explosive, particularly for #whitecollarworkers who are most at #risk of #jobdisplacement. Russell Lee -- Office worker in wheat broker's office. Whitman County, Washington (Library of Congress, FSA/OWI)
Lee took this picture in July 1941, before the entry of the USA into the Second World War and the 1942 creation of the Office of War Information (OWI) .
Our mental imagery of the USA in the years preceding WW2 and the OWI draws largely on newsreel, news photography, documentary photography and art of the thirties, particularly WPA/FAP work. Office workers and other white collar workers do not feature as strongly in our imaginations as the unemployed, rural Americans, and male blue collar workers.
