  1. Russell Lee -- Office worker in wheat broker's office. Whitman County, Washington (Library of Congress, FSA/OWI)

Lee took this picture in July 1941, before the entry of the USA into the Second World War and the 1942 creation of the Office of War Information (OWI) .

Our mental imagery of the USA in the years preceding WW2 and the OWI draws largely on newsreel, news photography, documentary photography and art of the thirties, particularly WPA/FAP work. Office workers and other white collar workers do not feature as strongly in our imaginations as the unemployed, rural Americans, and male blue collar workers.

  3. A pair of photos from September 1938, taken by Russell Lee for Farm Security Administration, via the Library of Congress website. Lee entitled these "Group of Italians talking, Decatur Street, New Orleans, Louisiana."

The scene is on the 1100 block of Decatur in the French Quarter, on the sidewalk in front of about where Molly's at the Market and Coop's Place are now.
