All else being equal, #bird wings produce less lift in low density air... making it more difficult to remain aloft... Yet this doesn't seem to put them off. Bar-headed geese, cranes and bar-tailed godwits have recorded altitude records of 6,000 m and more. So how do they manage to take to the air when thin air offers little lift?

@CStamp @noondlyt I just looked at Wikipedia’s list of birds called #buzzards—it included almost all of the #Buteos whose names I recognize, including #RedTailedHawks, something I never heard growing up in California. OTOH, my mother and many others called the local #TurkeyVultures (Cathartes aura) buzzards or #TurkeyBuzzards.

Just finished putting up the decorations so we're ready for Turkey Vulture Day.
The Turkey Vulture breeds in southern farmland and open forest habitats in all provinces and their population has dramatically increased in the last 50 years. They use their keen vision and excellent sense of smell to locate food, flying low enough to detect the gasses produced by decaying flesh. They're so cute...

For all that I see #vultures riding the thermals high above me every day, for all the deer I see so often on these lands, it was the first time I saw vultures around a deer's carcass. The stag was likely struck by a vehicle. He was lying on the side of the road. The #TurkeyVultures are one of nature's biggest cleaners. They swoop down from above, a kind of angel of death/sanitation service... They do important work. Gratitude. #ScianewTerritory

Well, this is something you don't see every day. A dead #squirrel was lying on a sidewalk next to the street. Two #turkeyvultures were trying to pull out its intestines. One of them gave me the business, or maybe it was just trying to spit out squirrel hair. #birds #birding #birdsofmastodon #nature #photography #cleanupcrew
