  1. @CStamp @noondlyt I just looked at Wikipedia’s list of birds called #buzzards—it included almost all of the #Buteos whose names I recognize, including #RedTailedHawks, something I never heard growing up in California. OTOH, my mother and many others called the local #TurkeyVultures (Cathartes aura) buzzards or #TurkeyBuzzards.

  6. For all that I see #vultures riding the thermals high above me every day, for all the deer I see so often on these lands, it was the first time I saw vultures around a deer's carcass. The stag was likely struck by a vehicle. He was lying on the side of the road. The #TurkeyVultures are one of nature's biggest cleaners. They swoop down from above, a kind of angel of death/sanitation service... They do important work. Gratitude. #ScianewTerritory

  7. Well, this is something you don't see every day. A dead #squirrel was lying on a sidewalk next to the street. Two #turkeyvultures were trying to pull out its intestines. One of them gave me the business, or maybe it was just trying to spit out squirrel hair. #birds #birding #birdsofmastodon #nature #photography #cleanupcrew
