Hi - I'm Lachlan, and my latest nerd-snipe has cost like 6 months and counting.
I struggle having contiguous periods of time that I can play test, but get little blocks of it. So, I've built an implementation of MCTS in #Rust that can play various games. (I also learned Rust). The main reason is that I wanted to run simulations on Emu Bay Railway Company so I would hopefully be able to make it not broken and interesting.#BoardgameDesign #Boardgames #Traingames #Cuberails #EmuBayRailwayCompany

We played 3-player Chicago Express last night. Incredibly tight game, where every decision mattered: first place, $82; second place, $80; third place, $78. #boardgames #TrainGames

It's a great irony that #TrainGames (both #BoardGames and #VideoGames ) are almost always about, or primarily about track.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel in the Swiss Alps is the longest train tunnel at over 57 km (35.5 miles) long. Opened in 2016, the majority of trains passing through it are freight trains: one of the biggest hopes behind its construction was to reduce the environmental impact and road dangers of heavy trucks.
Check out the demo of Iron Roads and construct your own underground web of train tunnels!

Three more Winsome train games have been licensed by RGG: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3220055/article/43828606#43828606
I actually quite enjoy Southern Pacific. It's one of just a couple that I kept vs reselling after a handful of plays.
Best at 4, but try and learn to play at 3. I think it reveals it's secrets more easily then. I find 5p to just be sort of opaquely antagonistic as it can turn the game into 4v1 setup almost. As neat as that sounds, it's less interesting in practice.

I finally played my first #18xx game: Shikoku 1889 from Grand Trunk Games. We stopped in phase 5, but it was a lot of fun. We got a couple of things wrong, but it was relatively easy to learn. Thank you to @ambierona for the great rules teach video. 😃👍 #ccmf #boardgames #TrainGames

Today (Oct 27) is the 20th anniversary of the release of #RailroadTycoon3, and there is still no true successor.

Depending on your timezone - today (2024-10-27) is the 20th anniversary of Railroad Tycoon 3 coming out. Sadly - as far as I can tell - there's nothing yet that has quite matched it.
There've been other transport games - Railway Empire, OpenTTD, Cities In Motion, Sid Meier's Railroads - but nothing else has had that rich economic model, and that feeling that I'm making financial business decisions rather than being a civil engineer.

Hey hey hey friends, it's #TrainTuesday!
Not playing much right now, but I really wish I was playing #AgeOfSteam. It may have replaced Brass Birmingham as my favourite game.
What do you wish you were playing RIGHT NOW?

Dutch Intercity is getting a reprint via RGG because they tracked down the designer's daughter who helped facilitate the agreement;

It's not always very populated, but #traintuesday is my favourite weekly thread on Reddit. Maybe we could start Train Tuesday here on Mastodon? Start posting about train games every week? Maybe some #trains to go with it?

#18xx, plus #EmpireBuilder (Crayon Rails), plus #AgeOfSteam in a tasty real time digital form = #RailroadTycoon
It has such a satisfying gameplay loop that still hasn't really had anything like it since Railroad Tycoon 3
Save us #SidMeier, you're our only hope.

I'm the kinda dork who does an #AgeOfSteam redraw, and instantly goes 'Huh. Now I've got the assets, I should try making a map of my own!'
First draft of 'Victorian Gold Rush', a solo map, might be almost done. Then to figure out if it actually plays OK.

Decided I wanted to try the Scotland #AgeOfSteam map, so did my first redraw. I'm quite happy with how this turned out, so there's a reasonable chance I'll make another.
