As you expand your network in #IronRoads you will likely run into lock-ups due to trains trying to travel in opposite directions down the same length of track, meeting head-on, and stopping. One of many strategies to avoid this is to set up a one-way system so that trains are always travelling in the same direction and this problem does not occur. The video shows an example of this.

Why would a railway need a turtle tunnel?
Turtles, and other similarly sized creatures, have a habit of getting stuck on railway tracks
Wildlife crossing structures like tunnels allow safe passage across railways.
Other options include mowing vegetation close to the tracks, electronic deterrants and slower train speeds.

No part of a train can ever stop on a non-stop zone in Iron Roads. So if the track downstream from the marked zone is blocked by traffic, it will wait until the path ahead is clear. It will only enter when both the non-stop zone, and the train's path out of the non-stop zone, are clear. This helps avoid lock-ups caused by waiting trains.
The easiest way to learn how to use them is to give it a try yourself - links in bio!

The Gotthard Base Tunnel in the Swiss Alps is the longest train tunnel at over 57 km (35.5 miles) long. Opened in 2016, the majority of trains passing through it are freight trains: one of the biggest hopes behind its construction was to reduce the environmental impact and road dangers of heavy trucks.
Check out the demo of Iron Roads and construct your own underground web of train tunnels!

This week we've been working on a new scenario for Iron Roads: Mistra - it is filled with protected buildings you can't build through, under or over, and will have to find a way to build around! We're hoping that the space restriction will provide an interesting challenge!

We just pushed update 0.2.0 to the Iron Roads playtest on Itch and Steam. Amongst many other changes, this adds a challenge mode - how many passengers can you transport in 7 (ingame) days?

We are reasonably happy with random maps generation in #IronRoads now, just random task generation to sort out and we'll be updating the beta

This week we worked on randomly generated maps and a challenge mode where you need to transport as many passengers as possible in a fixed amount of time. We also added light rail trains - cheap and cheerful but get the job done.
