  1. El Niño is being supersized before our eyes. The science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up.

The race now is between rising risks and our commitment to take climate action and protect people. We must win that race.

  12. The world’s vast permafrost regions contain three times more carbon than all living vegetation. Some are thawing and emitting more and more greenhouse gases.

#Permafrost cannot refreeze back. "Once you pass the permafrost’s threshold and the ice has gone and the landscape has changed, it is not going to come back for hundreds of years. On a human timescale, those systems have then effectively tipped into a system that will keep emitting carbon for decades or centuries."

"Unfortunately, there are no feasible geoengineering solutions on a broad scale. The only way to limit the thawing of millions of square kilometres is to reduce emissions rapidly. We need to act urgently."

  23. Day 72: In Papua you can never be sure about schedules and timing until the ship has actually taken off. After an obligatory 3 hour delay, I am eventually about to embark for the previous to last stage of my journey: 4 days of navigation over a 1,100km route: Lae-Umboi-Gloucester-Kimbe-Rabaul. I still don't know how to manage the last stretch from Rabaul to Buka....

I can't believe that after 70 days of travel I am just about to complete the 28,000km dividing Italy from the Solomons without flying! It will count nothing in terms of overall greenhouse emissions, but for me, now, it's everytghing I can do to for this wonderful fragile planet. 91/

I slow travel mainly to reduce my carbon footprint (by 10 times according to available estimates) but also to experience travel as most people in this world do.

  36. Siberia's growing methane threat could offset 20% of global methane reduction targets by 2050

The #Arctic is warming at an accelerating pace. As #permafrost thaws across vast areas and wildfires become more frequent, large amounts of #methane (CH4) are being released. Together, these changes are reshaping the region's #GreenhouseGas emissions and further intensifying climate change.

In a study published in Science on August 6, an international team led by Professor Liu Yi from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics #IAP of the Chinese Academy of Sciences investigated how #CH4 #emissions in #Siberia are evolving under #ClimateChange. The study showed how atmospheric circulation promotes #wildfire activity and #methanogenesis and thereby drives the recent sharp rise in CH4 emissions.

  41. The terrifying scenes we’ve seen so far this summer are the latest part of a pernicious long-term pattern.

Across the world, the past 11 years have been the 11 hottest ever recorded – and with a super strength El Niño forming in the Pacific which could pour yet more fuel on the fire, that trend is all but certain to continue.

The climate emergency is here – and no one can say they didn’t see it coming.
