  1. Because I am as predictable as you'd expect, I spent the day kayaking and snorkelling in a marine reserve in Tīkapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf.

Saw a ton of snapper, various other fishes which I probably need to learn to identify, sea urchins, tiny crabs and one beautiful and quite large stingray (probably a cownose stingray).

Hard to say who was most excited between the Little One, my partner and me.
🐟🌊💙 ( we need a stingray emoji too)

Save the Hauraki Gulf, it really is a taonga.

  2. The good, the bad and the ugly about the new Hauraki Gulf Protection Act. 🌊

This new law will increase protection in the waters of the Hauraki Gulf and is coming into force from next weekend. 🐳

  3. While not lacking criticism, the Hauraki Gulf Protection Act is coming into force this weekend.

It is a net positive, despite its shortcomings, but much more work needs to be done to restore the mauri of Tīkapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.

  4. Now that we're awake anyway, check out the awesome work of Heal the Hauraki.

This episode is about the amazing people doing the mahi to restore ecosystems in Tīkapa Moana Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.

AKA some of the witches with green liquid that Shane Jones is so scared of.
I think it is quite positive, inspiring and uplifting.

  5. Ignoring the popular demand for protection to cave to commercial fishers again.

This is yet more regulatory capture from the fishing industry preventing actual protection for a dwindling return of about $14K a year.

The health of the Hauraki Gulf is worth so much more than that.
(And there would be more fish for everyone if the area was protected properly) 🐟

  6. No one but the fishing industry (and Shame Jones) wants this.

Is it worth sacrificing actual protection of the Hauraki Gulf for roughly $14k a year, when we could protect it and rebuild a much more abundant ecosystem there?
