(Example text in reply toot)This is a NZ Orange roughy fishery that is in freefall. MPI is consulting what to do about it. They need to prioritise sustainability over profits. The ESCR ORH3B must be closed immediately. Even the most conservative option may fall short.

Essential listening. Excellent summary of how a once abundant deep sea fish is now at risk.
Orange roughy are caught by bottom trawling. Trawling destroys the ecosystems where roughy congregate.
Bottom trawling is indefensible, which is exactly why Greenpeace activists recently rebranded bottom trawlers on the Chatham Rise - the same area where roughy are now under pressure.

UK proposes a wider ban on destructive bottom trawling.Meanwhile, New Zealand allows trawlers to target ancient coral seamount habitats and is the ONLY country still bottom trawling international waters in the South Pacific.
