This is light on detail, and it comes from noted environment-wrecker party ACT, so take with a generous sprinkle of salt but...
It appears to be a basically OK proposal? ( I know, never thought I'd say that about anything ACT)
Mainly the bit about establishing a separate FMA (Fisheries Management Area) for the Hauraki Gulf is something advocates have been discussing for a long time, and would be great for the Marine Park.
Still needs to explicitly ban bottom trawling in the area though.

What's the point of having "Marine Protected Areas" if you allow Bottom Trawling?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNRgihjRJMc
"The UK government has opened a public consultation on bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas (Stage 3 MPA consultation). They are asking for citizens’ opinions on whether destructive practices like bottom trawling should be allowed to continue inside Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs)."

The awesomely named "Review of sustainability measures for orange roughy (ORH 3B)" is emblematic of putting profits over ocean health. 🌊
You can tell the government to ban bottom trawling now.
Just send them an email.
(Example text in reply toot)This is a NZ Orange roughy fishery that is in freefall. MPI is consulting what to do about it. They need to prioritise sustainability over profits. The ESCR ORH3B must be closed immediately. Even the most conservative option may fall short.

Essential listening. Excellent summary of how a once abundant deep sea fish is now at risk.
Orange roughy are caught by bottom trawling. Trawling destroys the ecosystems where roughy congregate.
Bottom trawling is indefensible, which is exactly why Greenpeace activists recently rebranded bottom trawlers on the Chatham Rise - the same area where roughy are now under pressure.

“Over the past two decades, fewer vessels have trawled the South Pacific’s high seas. Companies from only one country have kept at it, an island nation with a green reputation: Aotearoa New Zealand.”
