Helping others is the thing I most enjoy at this stage of my career. Enter a new engagement offering at #TheIntersection … Percentage Product Marketing.
You might be in early stage mode and know you need product marketing but not quite at that point where sustaining an FTE makes sense. Or maybe you're looking to stand up a new Product Marketing function and need help establishing the charter for the team, defining a blueprint for the roles needed, maybe even some help interviewing candidates. I am here to help you through this stage and processes and be set up for success!

Big #Tech and #InfoSec has a hiring disorder. They over hire without constraint when the market says “good” and the moment there is any blip they purge. This is both a real problem and more than an analogy to a serious medical issue.
This has been a worsening trend over the last decade and it’s really become noticed. Seeing the impact of the humans who are affected by this behavior is heartbreaking. And it’s not the execs who do this that are impacted, they are incented to do this, their rewards are based on market performance, which is the driver of this behavior.
So we have leaders who are rewarded for creating and continuing this model. People are our greatest asset my ass. You’ve lost the right to say that.
There will be an upswing. Again. That’s what markets do. The question will be whether people remember this and choose not to participate. There is now a much bigger set of opportunities outside these Big Tech orgs that are both as rewarding (in money and satisfaction) and way more fun without all the baggage and tax you pay to be in those environments.
To all those impacted, I say again, you did nothing wrong, it’s not you, there’s a whole world out here that is amazing, and what you have learned working in those places is valuable, really valuable. Just navigating the complexities, rallying people behind an idea, Influencing without control … all incredibly impactful skills. Not to mention the technology knowledge you have.
There are many people on LI and other places offering to chat and help, take a breath, and then use your time to chat to them, you will gain both some confidence and some nuggets of advice that will get you going again.
I will always have time on #TheIntersection for people to book a slot to talk. I will make the time.
Kia Kaha.

This one's been in the draft folder for a long time! I love doing this, but has not always been the case. I've been lucky to have great coaches, managers and comms people help me get better and be successful on the biggest stages. It's an aspect of a role that matters to me, and when missing becomes a blocker. And so, todays topic is ...Presentations and Demos!

Blog: Hooray for Generalists!
I’ll start by saying, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with being a specialist or just loving “one thing”. Frankly I am envious.
But I want to dedicate this post to the Generalists, to those of us that like multiple things, love roles with multiple aspects and/or bring together multiple disciplines.

Ok, I did this a while back but a lot has changed. So here’s a new #introduction
I’ve worked my whole life in tech and security, spent 13 years at #Microsoft and a couple at #Google, a short stint working in #mentalhealth and currently working on #SelfDrivingTrucks (which is both super geeky technical and has a lot of safety and security aspects, so different but same same)
I run https://theintersection.app site and https://theintersection.social instance where I hope to provide help, resources and support for peoples #mentalhealth … you are welcome to join or just follow #theintersection
I’ll also be posting #cycling #biking #CatsOfMastodon and #DogsOfMastodon along with snark, sarcasm and thoughts on #InfoSec in general and the odd #Sportsball post
It takes a little time to establish yourself here, follow liberally (and then mute or unfollow if needed), Boost to on-share and Hashtag Everything! Remember, no ads and no data selling Algorithms also mean no funds, so support your instance admins!
This place is fun and engaging, let’s keep it this way :)

Welcome to all the new people joining the #Fediverse !
Boost, Favorite and use Hashtags liberally, it’s how you follow and find people and threads. No ads, no algorithm, it’s what you make it. Oh and donate a few $$ to your instance admin, they’re paying for what you use (refer: no ads).
#mentalhealth humans are welcome on this instance #TheIntersection

I have so many things I want to write about, beginning to wonder about just making a compendium style book.
-
Arguments. They have a place and in the right usage are hugely helpful.
Arguments to debate something and test perspectives respectfully lead to better outcomes.
Arguments where someone is simply aiming to win or the most senior/loud person wins will most likely be suboptimal and lead to bad outcomes.

There’s been a huge influx of people so I’m gonna re-up my #introduction
I’m a security geek who rides bikes and currently works on autonomous vehicles (specifically self-driving trucks).
I worked at #Microsoft for 13 years in Server, Management and Security teams, Google cloud for a couple of years, a wee diversion to Headspace for a year and now back in tech at Aurora. The other 20ish years of work were in consulting, engineering and support roles in tech around the world. Yeah I’m old.
I ride a lot of bikes, usually long distances or up big mountains, mostly gravel, a bit of road and the odd bike bike carnage.
I’ll shitpost on InfoSec, cats, dogs, bikes and work stuff. Expect some snark and memes.
I promise to use CW for things that might be hard for people, actively remembering to update the image screen reader text, and to be nice.
I also run #TheIntersection which is a site providing tech people with mental health support, I have panic disorder myself and anxiety is a daily thing for me. Don’t struggle alone, connect for help.
Let’s make this place awesome.

Blog: on the arts of hiring and getting hired
I wrote this a few weeks back, hopefully some helpful thoughts from experiences I’ve had as both the hiring manager and the person getting hired.
