At Aurora, we’re committed to prioritizing safety and transparency in how we develop and deploy our self-driving products. As part of our commitment to sharing our work with regulators, shareholders, and the general public, we’re releasing an updated Safety Report, our 2022 Voluntary Safety Self-Assessment (VSSA).
The U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) encourage autonomous vehicle developers to share their safety approaches in these VSSA reports, and this release marks our third edition VSSA for our self-driving technology.

Things are getting more and more real every day!
Today we announced the expansion of our autonomous pilot with a new commercial lane between Fort Worth and El Paso. The 600-mile lane across Texas launched in October and is supporting Uber Freight customers as they prepare for the 2022 holiday season.

Open role alert! I’m hiring a PMM to join the team, assist us get to the Aurora Horizon commercial launch and then lead the launch of Aurora Connect after that.
This role would be great for a PMM who has had a round of experience with crafting a narrative and seeing what it takes to launch a product. This is _not_ a Senior PMM role, but it can and will grow into that in 18-24 months.
If you want to work with cool technology, collab with an incredible team of super smart humans and love GSD, then let us know!
Locations are flexible, the platform asks us to list locations but to be honest while we have groups of people in Seattle, the Bay Area, Dallas, Pittsburg and NYC, you can do this role from anywhere in the US. A little travel is required for things like team planning and actually riding in trucks :)

Self-driving vehicles. A thread.
I work at an autonomous vehicle company. With a background in security, this is actually very much a parallel and many of the same frameworks apply. We’re focused first on trucks and freight, but cars will follow. There’s been some interesting commentary recently, so let’s unpack a few things.
1. Not all AV is equal. What Tesla is doing is very different to what Waymo, Aurora and others are doing. It all sounds the same, but like many things, the details matter. Frankly vision (cameras) are not enough and I personally would not trust it beyond “driver assist” levels.
2. The argument that “this will never work” is untrue. It already does. I’ve ridden on a fully self-driven truck route. It’s not quite “ready” as there are hardening aspects and some truck platform hardware needed for full redundancy. The real question is “how can it work profitably”.
3. Trucks and freight are the right place to start. Truck routes, especially the long haul “middle miles” are incredibly static, the jobs humans dont want (80k shortage) and are not good at (fatigue, focus) and so you can know every square inch of that route. It’s the best place to get started, mature the tech and expand from there. It’s also where commercial viability starts.
4. Speculation: I think ride hailing anywhere to anywhere for consumers is a tough place to be and will be hard to get profitable in the near term. Just too many variables to factor in.
5. There’s a lot of … aspirational … statements made by some companies. It’s not unlike security, where fundamentals matter, truth matters, and you need to be good at that before you try to innovate.
6. It’s fascinating when you dig into things like LiDAR where there are scientific, physics and regulatory policies that all collide in what is possible and what is allowed. These are two different things.
7. If you live in America and you have a package transit through Texas, pretty good chance it rode in an autonomous truck :)We have published our roadmap and are tracking. Feature Complete Q1, Driver Ready Q4 (I.e no need for human fallback), Commercial launch Q1 24.
I’m loving this space, it’s hard, challenging, fascinating and full of potential. I get to be a hardware geek, an AI geek, a SaaS geek, a security nerd and change the world.
