This time with video (hopefully)... I found a 5 meter resolution digital elevation model of a part of the Austrian Alps (Tyrol[1]) and quickly visualized the region around the aforementioned Hintereisferner glacier using my https://shadergraph.thi.ng/ editor. The glacier itself is visible in the bottom left corner of the cropped terrain. The picture I posted earlier[2] was taken just north-east of the valley confluence nearest to the glacier tongue. Neighboring Kesselwandferner and Gepatschferner (the largest of the remaining glaciers in the Eastern Alps) are visible too...
If you want to try it with your own DEMs, just drag the image (as PNG) into the browser window, then create shader nodes: Normal map, Ambient Occlusion, Bump and Multiply (and set respective inputs for each node/pass)

Awhile back, I stumbled across a Mel the Terrain Tutor video that shared a technique for using plaster bandages and spackle to make quite decent looking hill terrain. It's a cool technique and I had some leftover packaging that had the potential to become something cool, so I decided to give it a try. @clavicorde Dans mon cas (petites carottes de 2,5 cm de diamètre), j'utilisais une simple perceuse modifiée : le foret est remplacé par un tube diamanté, qui est refroidi par de l'eau à l'aide d'un tuyau relié à un pulvérisateur. Il faut donc opérer à deux : un qui tient la carotteuse, l'autre qui pompe pour maintenir la pression dans le pulvérisateur. Cela signifie aussi qu'il faut transporter une valise de batteries et parfois des bidons d'eau sur le terrain ! Ici ça allait, l'affleurement n'était qu'à une vingtaine de minutes de marche du plus proche stationnement et il y avait une rivière juste à côté pour remplir le pulvérisateur.
