A Mountain for Fathers Day
Apparently my last mountain project was enough to give my son a taste for terrain making, because he started asking to make some more. I quickly made up a couple of MDF bases and then we grabbed some spare packing paper and went to work. A rough shape emerged fairly quickly for both pieces, my daughter also got involved as well helping to cut bandages, soak them and lay them over the top to build up the initial form. It all made for a fun crafternoon. We allowed everything to dry out before […]https://hobbies.deimos-legion.net/2026/09/06/a-mountain-for-fathers-day/

For anyone interested, here's a round-up of my hobby projects from this month (and the progress I'm making on the next video/pdf): https://www.patreon.com/csp_kris/posts/monthly-round-up-168186038
(note that I'm posting these over on patreon - but they're public articles - so you don't need to join/sign-up to read them ;) )

I wanted to share some of the modular terrain I've been working on. I designed the tiles and blocks to use magnets arranged in a grid to let the pieces interlock, and to let miniatures snap into place during play. The board is currently 24x24, tiles and blocks are either 2x2 or 4x4. #ttrpg #terrainbuilding

Making calamari myself. Well kinda. These tentacles are made from Sculpey for the ship diorama. First time working with the stuff. So far it’s good. Not as tacky as miliput. But you have to bake it. That is a good and a bad thing sometimes. 😅 #Nerdlings #miniaturepainting #miniPainting #terrainBuilding

As i'm currently offended by software industry in general and can't write software anymore, i've switched to #wfb terrain making. Had to do something with material for Atari cartridge cases. I've used my new FreeCad design skills to create parametrized WFB movement trays, so i can output trays of any size with variable base sizes, export it to stl and print on fdm printer. #oldworld #terrainbuilding Buildings were created by Doctor-Spork, very nice models inspired by wfb 4ed terrain models by GW

More progress from the diorama piece. But I really need to finish it up. Only one month until deadline. I still need to make the underwater base underneath it. Oh and a huge ass kraken. 😅 #Nerdlings #MiniPainting #miniaturepainting #terrainBuilding

More progress done on my sratchbuild ship for the diorama. I now have a headcanon that my little fox maker is the shipwright for this and is hammering and screwing down all the planks. 😄 #Nerdlings #MiniaturePainting #MiniPainting #terrainBuilding

It is quite fun to build with coffee stirrer and other small wood stuff. It‘s getting somewhere I think. 😄 #Nerdlings #miniaturePainting #terrainBuilding

I went under the coffee stirrer terrain builders. But unlike @erikcats I have a conscience and did buy a big pack of them instead of robbing a Starbucks. 😄 #Nerdlings #miniaturePainting #terrainBuilding

Slight spoilers for the #DelianTomb but I'm so happy with how this terrain has turned out!
My own take on magnetic dungeon tiles plus some extra bits without nasty near-unrecyclable XPS foam :)

Dry bushing and washing the trunk and roots. The texture is from scratching the epoxy putty with a knife while it was still soft plus the twisted florist wire showing through. I'll put some sort of detail in the hole under the roots but haven't decided what yet. Maybe a small borrowing animal peaking out. I might be able to sculpt a passable rat.

Making a tree armature from scratch. Florist wire, milliput, mod podge, fender washers, sea foam, and lots of PVA and CA glue. Painted with a grey-brown spray primer/base.
Needs some dry brushing and washing and obviously foliage. I'd like to do something more than basic flocking.
It's not for a larger diorama or gaming setup, just a tree for its own sake and as a learning experiment.
