  14. We have been running Diane Skoll's remind for a few years now.

    dianne.skoll.ca/projects/remin

It's a really smart, lofi calendar tool.

Somewhere along the way, we discovered that a text file (or directory full of them) paired with something like syncthing solved most of the calendar sharing needs for #ThisOldClownHouse.

I was delighted to learn that the project now has a strong, well-worded stance against ai/llm/vibe/slop.

  28. One of the things which encouraged me towards less "trendy" software is that it hasn't gotten totally caught up in ai-hype. Books written before the slop-pocalypse are really useful, and turn out to be a nice way to soothe my inner nerd while I continue to learn new (to me) things.

As an example, the venerable "Unix Power Tools" has a wonderful chapter on the vi editor:

    docstore.mik.ua/orelly/unix/up

    Enjoy!

  32. My tiny brain has yet to have been convinced that AI hype is a good thing for the environment, projects it gets foisted upon, creativity, or the human psyche.

Large language models on all corporate levels destroy everything around them.

I've done extensive research; it's so horrific that if crying about it would revert things I would have cried the Amazone river full.

LLMs as companions are bad news for the human Psyche. I have contact with a few victims of these LLMs who would rather {talk to} send strings to a mathematical model then speak to a real person. Serious pshychiatirc intervention is needed

I am going to find out also why massive projects, massive open source projects seem not to care about:

    • the wasteland that those LLM driven data centers create
    • the fact that we cannot buy
    • memory
    • ssds
    • mechanical spinning hard drives
    • full computing and household devices

... for nomal prices, because those critical components have been hijacked by data center underlords who can't even get enough permissions to build all those projects in reality

Part of it we all know, it's the LLM bubble, just like the house bubble in the USA some decades ago. Other part is that those underlords dont want us to owe our hardware anymore, so they can tighten their fascistic lock on the computing population.
Look how they want to force even open source OS to age gate the systems so they can get real ID globally

And I enjoy doing things the hard way

I've always done my projects from the bottom up, Linux when many sources needed to be crosscompiled in the alpha days from DOS, which was fun but tedious.
All current BSD flavours can be done that way too, if you still chose to do so, IIRC

Thank you for your enlightning response

  36. I always ask similar questions like the following,

What will you do when you discover that the kernel of your favorite Operating System now gets programming assistance in any form of a power guzzling ocean warming large language model?

Will you fork the kernel yourself? Do you have the programming capability

There are a lot of folk who are pissed off at Linus Torvalds, for allowing some of his maintainers to use large language models to assist in finding bugs.

The Head Programmer of the fantastic and Beautiful curl also uses a large language model in some form, to hunt for bugs, because both he and Greg from the Linux kernel, saw that the LLM used on GitHub is now suddenly much better at finding those pesky bugs.

Mind you, the only LLM I like is the one that runs locally on my low powered Android phone. That's a micro LLM

Thanks in advance for your response
