The whole LLM bubble has thrown a massive locomotive in my chain off storage.
It is now not feasible for me to buy USB sticks SSDs HDDs hard drives just to experiment.
Without experimenting I will not learn how to properly use new operating systems.
I have still not be able to test illumos in a proper manner...
To give an indication of the markup difference that I have, an 8TB hard drive which had cost me USD140 is now close to USD 400
A 64 GB microSD card went from USD 5 to USD 20 which throws a wrench into my Raspberry Pi operations.
USB sticks also went the same route. I use those to boot up the raspberry pies so that I can feed the micro SD cards with data
I've had quite a few HDD fail and some SATA SSD fail. All within the past two year and a half, and this is storage that I was planning to replace in this year.
It's a strange world that we now need data center projects in order to get small amounts of storage for own home use.

LLM technological advances
We need to educate our elderly that many things they see on Walled Gardens, spoken by what looks like people, are in fact just Avatars generated with Large Language Models.
These things will:
- show whatever you like to see
- say whatever you like to hear
- become your personal echo chamber
- lie and hallucinate, to make you feel Superior
to accomplish that you stay there much longer than normal!!!
You are literally the battery that feeds that large language model and thus the Walled Garden
These things now look so good, that they are difficult to distinguish from the real thing, a recorded living person, unless you look frame by frame, like I have from time to time.
What will tip you off is that they will say exactly what you want to hear, they'll show themselves exactly how you like to see them, they will even sound like the way you want them to do.
Many Walled Garden clients have been recording our voices and phrases for years, thus that was easily to accomplish.
So not only do these things steal our ability to buy SSDs memory GPUs and APUs for normal prices, they also critically mislead our elderly and those who are LLM computer illiterate.
That can be a billion+ people
I have photographs / screencaps which I will deliberately not include, because I do not want to alienate those who want to read about the subject, but not have a large language model image plastered under this informative post
Inform your elderly!
Let them ask you if they are not sure
I have deliberately included the link to physical Walled Garden because those places just look so beautiful in that Verde colour

This is another controller identical to the one of the broken HDD
Of course you understand why I want to revive the broken Drive. With this controller the HDD boots properly
However this controller has problems with the parking routines for the head assembly.
As a net result I still have 4 TiB that i can't access on a good drive because the replacement controller has another issue

HDD in Azul
This is a sublime dark blue rendering of a SATA HDD
I created The composition of this Drive to contrast the sad fact that it's controller finally gave up and died a Silent Death.
The HDD controller fried itself after 19 years of dependable service.
My drive bay suddenly went into short protection, which gave me the indication that there was something wrong with the power circuit.I naively thought that it was something else, not realizing how long this drive has worked, stable, quietly, as hard as it can, as dependable as it can be. That's something I was not used to from Seagate consumer drives. It's partner drive died more than 10 years ago. It still made it to commendable age
I would have replaced this drive and many others if hard drive prices were normal:
- 8 TB HDD USD$120
- 16 TB HDD USD 300
- 22 TB HDD USD 450
All these drives are consumer grade none of them are server drives. Now I need a total of 128 TB of new HDD space. That's because I not only need to replace but I also need to expand the space
I will have to buy hard drives at the exorbitant prices which are now current. Now the LLM large language model slop shit hits hard here
Since I don't have the cash for this free I need to get myself sponsoring the drive space is needed for computing work
LLM price gouging sucks sweaty wet balls
At least I have been able to get myself a beautiful composition of the corps of the drive

My tiny brain has yet to have been convinced that AI hype is a good thing for the environment, projects it gets foisted upon, creativity, or the human psyche.
Large language models on all corporate levels destroy everything around them.
I've done extensive research; it's so horrific that if crying about it would revert things I would have cried the Amazone river full.
LLMs as companions are bad news for the human Psyche. I have contact with a few victims of these LLMs who would rather {talk to} send strings to a mathematical model then speak to a real person. Serious pshychiatirc intervention is needed
I am going to find out also why massive projects, massive open source projects seem not to care about:
- the wasteland that those LLM driven data centers create
- the fact that we cannot buy
- memory
- ssds
- mechanical spinning hard drives
- full computing and household devices
... for nomal prices, because those critical components have been hijacked by data center underlords who can't even get enough permissions to build all those projects in reality
Part of it we all know, it's the LLM bubble, just like the house bubble in the USA some decades ago. Other part is that those underlords dont want us to owe our hardware anymore, so they can tighten their fascistic lock on the computing population.
Look how they want to force even open source OS to age gate the systems so they can get real ID globallyAnd I enjoy doing things the hard way
I've always done my projects from the bottom up, Linux when many sources needed to be crosscompiled in the alpha days from DOS, which was fun but tedious.
All current BSD flavours can be done that way too, if you still chose to do so, IIRCThank you for your enlightning response

I always ask similar questions like the following,
What will you do when you discover that the kernel of your favorite Operating System now gets programming assistance in any form of a power guzzling ocean warming large language model?
Will you fork the kernel yourself? Do you have the programming capability
There are a lot of folk who are pissed off at Linus Torvalds, for allowing some of his maintainers to use large language models to assist in finding bugs.
The Head Programmer of the fantastic and Beautiful
curlalso uses a large language model in some form, to hunt for bugs, because both he and Greg from the Linux kernel, saw that the LLM used on GitHub is now suddenly much better at finding those pesky bugs.Mind you, the only LLM I like is the one that runs locally on my low powered Android phone. That's a micro LLM
