  1. Quote of the day, 3 July: St. John of the Cross

Spiritual persons ought to deny all apprehensions and the temporal delights of the exterior senses…. They should not want to grasp for sensory communications or weigh themselves down with these, since doing so is what most derogates from faith.

Manifestly, these sensory visions and apprehensions cannot serve as a means for union since they bear no proportion to God. This was one of the reasons for Christ’s not wanting Mary Magdalene or St. Thomas to touch him [Jn. 20:17, 27-29].

The devil is most pleased when he sees that people desire to accept revelations and are inclined toward them. For then he has an excellent opportunity to inject errors and disparage faith as much as possible. As I have declared [cf. Ascent, II.11.7], people desiring these apprehensions become coarse in their faith and even expose themselves to many temptations and follies.

I have treated of these exterior apprehensions somewhat at length to shed more light in preparation for our discussion of the other apprehensions. There is so much to say, however, on this subject that I doubt whether I would ever finish. And I think I was too brief in only explaining that a person should be careful never to accept them—unless in some rare case and with extremely competent advice, and then without any desire for them.

But I think what I said is sufficient.

    1. KILVEY HILL: Walkers face footpath diversions as Skyline construction work begins on the hill

Walkers heading up Kilvey Hill are being warned to expect footpath diversions, after construction work began at the top of the hill.

Earthworks have started near the summit as part of the Skyline Swansea project, the £49m cable car and luge attraction planned for the hillside above St Thomas.

An aerial view of the summit shows the scale of the work, with a large area of ground cleared near the hilltop masts.

To keep people away from the construction area, several affected footpaths have been temporarily re-routed.

Skyline said the diversions were put in place to keep walkers safe while the work is carried out.

New signs have gone up across the hill pointing walkers along the temporary routes, including bilingual “Footpath Diversion” markers steering people away from the works.

Swansea Council has approved a temporary diverted route, which the company said would be monitored and maintained throughout construction to keep access open across the hill between Bonymaen and St Thomas.

Skyline said additional signage had been installed after feedback from the community, and would be kept under review as the work progressed.

The diversions are the most visible sign yet that work on the long-discussed scheme is now under way on the ground.

Much of the activity so far has involved clearing ground near the summit, where the earthworks are preparing the site for the downhill karting “luge” tracks.

The tree clearance is likely to be the most noticeable change to the much-loved hill. Skyline said it had been carried out in line with ecological advice and approved plans, and that many of the trees removed were diseased or non-native.

The company said the felled wood had been mulched into biomass for renewable energy, and that it had pledged to plant three native trees and shrubs for every tree removed, working with certified ecologists.

It added that it was already sourcing tree whips and native meadow seeds for planting later in the project, and was installing sustainable drainage to manage water run-off.

The project will see a gondola carry visitors from the Copper Quarter up to the summit of Kilvey Hill, on a site that has been years in the planning.

At the top, Skyline plans three luge karting tracks, a sky swing, a children’s playground, new and improved walking and mountain biking trails, and places to eat and drink, with a zipline added at a later stage.

The attraction is due to open in mid-2028 and will be the company’s first luge site in the UK.

Swansea Council approved the plans in March last year, and the authority has backed the scheme as a major investment expected to create jobs and draw visitors to the eastern side of the city.

Supporters see it as a boost for the local economy and a new reason for tourists to come to Swansea.

The plans have also faced opposition, however, with some residents and campaigners raising concerns about the impact on the hill and on open access to it.

In April, police warned demonstrators that action would follow as protests against the development continued.

Earlier this month, the much-loved “Green Man” sculpture was moved back into the woods on the hill, having been relocated during what supporters of the sculpture called a Skyline “eviction.”

Work has also begun on the other side of the project, with diggers moving in at the Landore park and ride site that will serve the attraction.

Kilvey Hill is a popular spot for dog walkers, runners and families drawn by its sweeping views over Swansea Bay, and the temporary routes are designed to keep those paths open while the work continues.

For now, walkers can still use Kilvey Hill, but are asked to follow the temporary signs and keep clear of the construction area. Skyline said existing paths and rights of way affected by the works would reopen when the attraction is finished.

    2. SWANSEA: St Thomas man jailed after knife threats

David Nigel Dallimore, of St Leger Crescent, St Thomas, Swansea, was brought before Swansea Crown Court after admitting possession of an offensive weapon, making threats with a bladed article in a private place, harassment, and battery. A kidnapping charge was not proceeded with after the prosecution offered no evidence on that count.

Judge Huw Rees described Dallimore’s actions as “inexplicable and bizarre” and said what had unfolded at the victim’s home “borders on a ménage of some kind.” He stressed that the courts were required to treat seriously offences involving “the culture of threatening with knives” as a matter of public policy.

The judge told Dallimore he had “devastated the family unit” but expressed hope that matters could eventually be put behind them. With a one-quarter discount applied for his guilty pleas, Dallimore was sentenced to 18 months in prison. He will serve up to half in custody before being released on licence to complete the remainder in the community.

The court heard that on March 13 this year, Dallimore was invited to the home of a woman he knew called Sian Lewis by a mutual friend. Prosecutor Craig Jones explained that the pair spent the evening drinking and socialising before having sex. The following morning Dallimore gave Ms Lewis his phone number as he left.

What followed was a rapid deterioration in Dallimore’s behaviour. He bombarded Ms Lewis with unwanted messages and calls before arriving at her home in the Manselton area of Swansea late on the evening of March 13, demanding to know who the males inside her property were.

The court was told Dallimore was “clearly under the influence of either alcohol or controlled substances” and refused to leave when asked, wedging his foot in the door to prevent it from closing. Ms Lewis eventually managed to push the door shut and the defendant left.

Dallimore returned in the early hours of the following morning. When the front door was opened he rushed inside and pulled a chef-type knife from the waistband of his trousers. He began waving the blade at a man in the property, David Evan Turner.

The prosecution outlined how Dallimore attempted to force Mr Turner to place his hands flat on the kitchen worktop so he could stab them, shouting “I’m going to kill you. I’m going to slash your face” and “Where’s the stuff?”. He slapped Mr Turner across the face and claimed he had served a prison sentence for murder, that accomplices were waiting outside, and that he had access to firearms.

Dallimore then concealed the knife behind the fridge and forced Mr Turner out of the property and into a works van parked outside, compelling his captive to drive them both away from the scene.

Officers had already been alerted and firearms units were deployed to the area. The van was located and stopped, with both occupants initially arrested. When police attended the property, two knives were recovered from behind the fridge and stab-type marks were noted on the kitchen worktop.

Dallimore has a history of convictions including for possession of offensive weapons, public disorder, battery, and motoring offences. In 2020 he was jailed for perverting the course of justice after crashing his car and then falsely blaming a cousin of his partner for taking the vehicle without consent – an accusation that led to the innocent man being arrested and placed at risk of recall to prison. His most recent conviction, from June 2025, was for dangerous driving, for which he received a community order.

Dean Pulling, representing Dallimore, acknowledged the conduct was “brazen” and would carry consequences beyond the courtroom. He characterised the episode as a “grotesque mid-life crisis,” describing an “ill-judged affair” followed by a loss of control driven by “misplaced jealousy when it became apparent that the sexual exploits of the previous night would not be repeated.”

The barrister told the court that Dallimore has three children with his wife, with a fourth on the way, along with both parties having one child each from previous relationships. He said that despite the events, Dallimore hopes to return to the family and “make amends,” and hopes his wife is prepared to “give him a second chance.”

    33. Quote of the day, 12 April: Silvio José Báez, ocd

Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:26-29).

The disciples experienced the encounter with the Risen Christ as a moment of infinite mercy. Before his Passion, one betrayed and sold him, another denied him, all the others fled and are now locked in, filled with fear. There were reasons for Jesus to rebuke and even reject them. However, that wasn’t the case. Jesus appears in their midst and greets them in a surprising way: “Peace be with you!” (Jn 20:19,21,26), a phrase that is repeated three times in today’s Gospel. Jesus doesn’t reproach or accuse them. Just one word: “peace.”

The phrase “peace be with you!”, which was spoken by Jesus, isn’t simply a greeting, best wishes, or a promise, but an affirmation: peace is here and now, peace is a reality within you. It’s a peace that falls down upon you because it comes from God. It’s a peace that gives health to ailing bodies and makes us overcome the fears that overwhelm us; it’s a peace that frees us from the sense of guilt and gives us the strength to fulfill our broken dreams; it’s a peace that gives us hope and strength in the midst of the dissatisfactions and problems that color our days with sadness.

Peace is the great gift of the Risen Jesus. Only with the peace that comes from above, which heals the heart and opens it to love, can we be witnesses and peacemakers in the world. Those who are brokenhearted, bitter, and full of selfish ambitions still haven’t come to know the peace that comes from above.

Without the peace of the Risen Lord we risk living with a profound inner emptiness, never being able to communicate any peace, joy, or hope—only suspicion and fear.

      Bishop Silvio José Báez, o.c.d.

      Auxiliary Bishop of Managua

    44. Councillor denies being suspended by Labour, says he quit over Skyline

Joe Hale, who represents St Thomas, announced last week that he was becoming an independent councillor. The move came after Swansea Bay News reported that he had been suspended by the Labour Party over allegations of harassment and malicious communications.

In a statement to Swansea Bay News, Cllr Hale said he had not received any notice of suspension from the Swansea Labour Party, and that he had resigned “due to the destruction of our only green space in our ward, Kilvey Hill.”

That directly contradicts a statement issued by the office of council leader Rob Stewart last week, which said Cllr Hale had been suspended on Thursday 19 February — six days before his video announcement — “following serious allegations of misconduct being received.”

The council leader’s office said the allegations, “specifically related to malicious communications and harassment,” had also been raised with police.

Cllr Hale said he was “absolutely opposed to public money being handed over to profiteers” and questioned why the council should “subsidise a private company via the public purse” given the economic hardship facing many residents.

The council leader’s office previously pushed back on Cllr Hale’s financial claims, saying the points he raised were “ones the council has formally answered via the planning process and / or via numerous questions submitted to the council’s technical officers,” and that “Cllr Hale has not accepted the answers given to him.”

Cllr Hale also addressed claims that he should have raised his objections sooner, saying: “I have from day one and even attempted to get the council to have public meetings in St Thomas. It is a matter of record that I spoke against this at planning.”

The council’s previous statement said records showed Cllr Hale “didn’t take the opportunity to attend cabinet meetings when these matters were discussed despite having the chance to do so.”

He also responded to suggestions that his proximity to the development influenced his position. “The fact that I live in St Thomas has been used as a reason as to why I have objected to Skyline, but we have been told by the planning department that St Thomas will not be affected. Or has something changed?”

The council leader’s office had previously noted that Cllr Hale “has continued to voice his opposition to the scheme which is near to his own property.”

Cllr Hale said he had received “huge support” from residents of St Thomas and Port Tennant since announcing his resignation, as well as from work and trade union colleagues.

      Cllr Hale’s statement in full:

First can i express my thanks to the residents of St Thomas and Port tennant for the huge support i have received since i announced my resignation from the Labour Party and can i thank my work colleagues and trade union colleagues for the same support and encoragement.

I have not recieved any form of notice of suspension from the Swansea Labour Party.

I resigned due to the destruction of our only green space in our ward, Kilvey Hill. The designated quiet area lost for ever and only one on the Eastside of Swansea.

I am absolutely opposed to public money being handed over to profiteers — why do we have to subsidise a private company via the public purse? Given the economic hardship many of our community are going through, giving our money to this type of venture is not what we should be doing.

Some have said i should have objected earlier and spoke up sooner. I have from day one and even attempted to get the council to have public meetings in St Thomas. It is a matter of record that i spoke against this at planning.

The fact that i live in St Thomas has been used as a reason as to why i have objected to Skyline, but we have been told by the planning dept that St Thomas will not be effected? Or has something changed?

    45. Councillor suspended by Labour Party over harassment allegations before announcing Skyline “resignation”

In a video posted to social media on Tuesday, Cllr Joe Hale announced he was becoming an independent councillor, blaming his departure on the Skyline development on Kilvey Hill and claiming “the Labour Party have left me.”

However, a statement issued by the office of Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart has revealed that Cllr Hale was suspended days before his video announcement.

A spokesperson said: “The Labour Party suspended Cllr Hale on Thursday 19th February, prior to his announcement, and following serious allegations of misconduct being received. The allegations of misconduct, specifically related to malicious communications and harassment, were also raised with the police.”

      Misinformation battle

The row comes as both Swansea Council and the developers, Skyline Swansea, have been forced to publicly counter what they describe as “misinformation circulating online” about the project.

In a social media post, the council directly addressed claims that Natural Resources Wales (NRW) knew nothing about the development, stating that NRW were consulted during the planning process. The council also refuted claims that tree felling was happening without permission, confirming that planning consent was granted in July 2025.

Skyline Swansea also issued a statement to reassure the public that access to Kilvey Hill was being maintained via a re-routed path, a move they said went “beyond minimum safety standards.”

      Hale’s video claims

VIDEO: Cllr Joe Hale’s announcement posted to social media on Tuesday 25 February

In his video, Cllr Hale said he could not “remain a Labour councillor when we’re spending £50 million on what, to all intents and purposes, is the gondola gamble.” He claimed the council had already invested £8 million and was proposing to increase this to £10 million.

He added that “the last three weeks” had been “a disgrace” and claimed “people are being hurt by the actions of politicians.”

      Council: Scheme near his property

Responding to the video, the statement from the council leader’s office questioned Cllr Hale’s motivations, stating that he “has continued to voice his opposition to the scheme which is near to his own property.”

It continued: “The points Cllr Hale raises are ones the council has formally answered via the planning process and / or via numerous questions submitted to the council’s technical officers. Cllr Hale has not accepted the answers given to him.”

The statement also noted that “the records show Cllr Hale didn’t take the opportunity to attend cabinet meetings when these matters were discussed despite having the chance to do so.”

Cllr Hale filmed his announcement with Kilvey Hill’s wooded area in the background. The council has countered claims that tree felling is happening without permission, stating planning consent was granted in July 2025

      “Extremely concerning” posts

The statement described Cllr Hale’s recent social media activity as “extremely concerning.”

“While Cllr Hale is entitled to campaign on any matter, it was extremely concerning to see Cllr Hale recently share posts which constituted malicious communications and harassment and contained abusive language and threats directed at his former colleagues,” it said.

      No response

Cllr Hale was contacted for comment on his suspension and the allegations but had not responded by the time of publication.
