  1. The second #insertAnInvert2024 prompt for deep-sea month is bathyal: the midnight zone between 1 and 4 km depth. This is the zone where I have done the most research studying the sea floor on continental slopes and margins. Sometimes we use ROVs and get to see cephalopods… but I selected unusual one I have not had the opportunity to see. 🧵1/n

  2. For the #SciArtSeptember prompt: illuminated and a bonus mesopelagic #invertebrate for #InsertAnInvert2024 it’s my #linocut of the #bioluminescent firefly squid! The firefly squid (Watasenia scintillans), also called sparkling enope squid or hotaru-ika in Japan, live at depth (200 to 400 m) and are bioluminescent and emit blue light from photophores. 🧵1/

  3. Time for the #Squidtember art prompts! This week we’re celebrating the strawberry squid. Strawberry squid are a deep sea squid that are cool for so many reasons. They are covered in tiny light-producing photophores that look like strawberry seeds. One of the coolest things about them is their mismatched eyes 👀

Thank you to OceanX (who is not on mastodon) for organizing art prompts!

I drew this in black and white in my sketchbook then colored in procreate 🎨

  4. Every Tuesday throughout #Squidtember, I'll be dropping a brand new squid coloring page!

    This week's squid is Bathyteuthis!

All the pages are in the Squid Zine, which you can check out here: givebutter.com/aNWslJ

If you color them in, I wanna see 👀

  5. It’s deep sea month for #InsertAnInvert2024 starting with the mesopelagic twilight zone in the upper 200 to 1000 m water depth and going deeper. So I’m sharing this adorable Bobtail squid (actually, not a squid, but a cephalopod of order Sepiolida, closer to cuttlefish) is printed by hand onto black Japanese washi paper with a deckle edge. 🧵1/2

  6. Good morning on this first day of #Squidtember 2024!

Need some reading for your Sunday? Download the SQUID ZINE! You can color & learn about 🦑!

It’s available in English, Spanish, & Japanese, thanks to translators Masaki Taya & Fernando Á. Fernández-Álvarez!

    The zine is pay-what-you-wish!

When you “get a ticket”, you’ll be emailed links to download in all 3 languages. Each will come with the option to download for digital reading or to print a double sided booklet! givebutter.com/aNWslJ

  7. Humboldt squid are too cool for just 1 post.

    Often ~100lbs
    Super strong
Live in areas with oxygen so low most other active predators can’t hack it
Live in huge squads- like over 1000 squid together
Have a color pattern based communication system
    Sometimes eat each other

There's one week left in #Squidtember. We gotta make the most of it!

  8. Bobtail squid... are they squid?

Depends who you ask. Bobtails are spectacular, cute as hell, often brightly colored, & mostly active at night.

On the cephalopod family tree, they're on a branch with the bottletails and cuttlefish (but they're *not* cuttlefish, just group with them).

    Oh, and they're extremely cute.

  9. No, it's not a scoop of stracciatella ice cream. It's the Pyjama squid (Sepioloidea lineolata)!

Like their cousins the bobtails, they often bury in the sediment. They're in the order Sepiida, which includes bobtails, cuttlefish, bottletails, and these cuties.

  11. Happy #Squidtember! Here's a lovely 🦑 weirdo that showed up to perform inverted balletic contortions for the cameras onboard NOAA's Okeanos Explorer, during a dive in the Gulf of Mexico in 2018.

You gotta love a deep-sea sighting that can make a marine biologist exclaim: "What is THAT?"

  12. The clock has struck midnight.
    It's officially #Squidtember in Philly!

If only I had a comically large bell I could ring. I wonder where I could get something like that. Oh well.

Squid biologists & appreciators of all kinds have been gearing up for a month long celebration of squid.

There are ~1 zillion ways to celebrate! I'll be sharing many medium/bad doodles. Brace yourselves.

  13. Euprymna scolope, the Hawaiian bobtail squid! This tiny squish has several superpowers including making sand suits and fishing for bioluminescent bacteria as babies that they stash in their light organs for use in hiding their silhouette at night.

  14. Ommastrephes bartramii, the neon flying squid! Majestically soaring high—well, few inches anyway—above the waves! Zoom! They can also be very colorful, sometimes bright blue and pink with a shiny side stripe! 🌈

  15. Happy #Squidtember! Starting off the month with a good spiky squish, the Vampire Squid, Vampyroteuthis infernalis! Because they have those two head noodles (retractile filaments) they're technically neither squid nor octopus (nor vampire), but their own cephalopod order!
