A 2024 invertebrate print for #invertefest: made for the deepest prompt of #InsertAnInvert2024, hadal - which refers to the deepest ocean trenches 6 km or more, it’s the headless chicken monster!
This is a lino block print of a strange-looking sea cucumber called Enypniastes eximia, the swimming sea cucumber, the pink see-through fantasia or the headless chicken monster!🧵

This is a lino block print of a strange-looking sea cucumber called Enypniastes eximia, the swimming sea cucumber, the pink see-through fantasia or the headless chicken monster! It is printed by hand on delicate 8" x 8" Japanese mulberry paper. 🧵

For #InsertAnInvert2024 worm prompt “not long, limbless” an animal that is fuchsia, indigo and yellow (that I used for the #printerSolstice split complimentary colour scheme prompt). 🧵1/2

The #insertAnInvert2024 prompt this week is epifauna, or animals that live on top of sediment by cementing or attaching their shells onto rock using filaments. I chose 2 blue mussels. The blue mussel (Mytilus edulis), or common mussel, is a medium-sized edible marine bivalve mollusc in the family Mytilidae. They are aptly called common mussels & are found on temperate beaches worldwide. They are also yummy.

The #insertaninvert2024 prompt is “housing” about invertebrate architecture & nests they build, but I’m going to talk about a species who borrows rather than builds because it’s the sweetest thing! Like an illustration in a fairytale for children, the Eastern Snail Shell Mason Bee (Osmia conjuncta), a small North American blue bee makes nests in suitable empty snail shells! How adorable is that!? 🧵1/

It’s a wildcard week for #InsertAnInvert2024 so I’m bringing you a spotted lanternfly along with a second dangerous but beautiful invasive species: the tree of heaven. The Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altimissa) is a deciduous tree native to northeast China and Taiwan, which was foolishly brought to Europe and North America in the 1700s where it as become known as a noxious weed and invasive plant. 🧵1/
