  1. For the #InsertAnInvert2024 prompt flyer, #artadventCalendar and #invertefest this final week of the year: my kaleidoscope of butterflies. Kaleidoscope is the wonderful name or term of venery for a group of butterflies so I designed this print to match the symmetrical images you can see in a kaleidoscope. There are three each of the orange Isabella’s Longwings (Nymphalidae Eueides isabella), 🧵1/2

  2. Day 15 #ArtAdventCalendar: The third #InsertAnInvert2024 prompt for deep sea month is abyssal - the lightless, extreme pressure and low oxygen zone 4 to 6 km below the surface. So I made a lino block print of a charming Grimpoteuthis octopus, one of a genus of pelagic cirrate (finned) octopods known as the dumbo octopuses. The fins reminded scientists of ears on the elephant in Disney’s 1941 film Dumbo. 🧵1/2

  7. For #ArtAdventCalendar day 3 my final hand-printed lino block print with gel plate printed areas is about Coronula diadema, a barnacle which specializes in humpback and some other baleen whales for #InsertAnInvert2024. Each print is 20.3 cm x 20.3 cm (8” x 8”) on lovely Japanese mulberry paper and shows the humpback whale swimming above and a close up of the whale below with six barnacles. 🧵1/3

  8. This December #InsertAnInvert2024 is about #insect motion. The first prompt is scuttler, about “early” insects who didn’t evolve flight. So I made a tiny #linocut silverfish (Lepisma saccharinum). It got its common name from its colour and its fishlike movements.

  9. For #WorldJellyfishDay & the 1st prompt, dangerous, for Blobfest month of #InsertAnInvert2024 it’s a smack of jellyfish!

The collective noun for a group of jellyfish is a “smack”. This amuses me, because I imagine them smacking their tentacles together in some sort of deepsea high five. To be honest, marine biologists speak of ‘blooms’& we do tend to lump in a bunch of soft-bodies marine creatures into the term jellyfish, 🧵

  10. For a wildcard #InsertAnInvert2024 week we’re going back in time all the way to the Cambrian for the Opabinia! The fossils of this soft-bodied 7 cm long animal are found in the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale Lagerstätte (505 million years ago) of British Columbia. Opabinia likely caught prey with the grasping claws on the end of its long tubular proboscis (like an elephant’s trunk). 🧵1/2

  16. For the second parasite for #InsertAnInvert2024 I’m sharing the source of carmine, a bright red pigment derived from carminic acid. It’s traditionally harvested from cochineal, a sessile parasite on Opuntia cacti in South America, north through to Mexico and the southwest US. They are laboriously collected by brushing them off the pads of prickly pear cacti. 🧵1/n

  17. The next shelled creature prompt for #InsertAnInvert2024 is a crawler - an invertebrate which can drag itself across surfaces. I cannot resist the spectacular lined chiton (Tonicella lineata) which have amazing, varied, complex multicoloured patterned shells. 🧵1/2

  18. This week’s #InsertAnInvert2024 prompt is about babies & childcare so I am of course going to talk about bees! Bees, famously care for & feed their young. Most are familiar with honeybees & how honey itself is produced to feed larvae in the hive. They communicate about pollen sources through dance! A worker bee can return to the hive & through the way it aligns itself 🧵1/n
