✨ Ever wonder why fresh snow sparkles in sunlight? Individual crystal facets act as tiny mirrors. When light hits at just the right angle, these flat surfaces create specular reflection: brilliant pinpoints distinct from snow's overall whiteness. Old snow loses this sparkle as crystals round through sintering, trading mirrors for curves.

  2. Some fun memories. In Norway I spent a bunch of time poking around mountains on Kvaløya, practicing my snowcraft, exploring with friends and speaking with the mountains on some solo missions.

I sure miss it. And I'm so grateful I got to go there. Life has been pretty bittersweet in the few years since - however, it's always something I'll remember...

  3. "Here, we map where snow meets the forest by computing the proportion of snowfall over forest. We used a global climate reanalysis and satellite tree cover data to derive the fraction of snowfall over forests at 0.1° resolution."

Work by University of #Utah based Cluster member McKenzie Skiles is cited in this #OpenAccess article recently published by Geophysical Research Letters.

  6. When there's so much #snow that it's getting difficult to even measure it.

Cluster member McKenzie Skiles speaks to KSL TV 5 about this season's precipitation in #Utah.

  7. I have a question for the #SnowScience #AvalancheResearch community:

I'm looking for small lightweight and preferably cheap #SnowDensity samplers- that can be taken along by volunteers on lightweight expeditions.

The kind that are a cylinder with a spring scale for example.

Where would you get these from in Europe? Google is failing me...

    Thanks in advance!

  8. Intentionally triggered this slide on a small steep slope very close to the Carson Pass trailhead. While shallow the debris did cover the existing skin track. #carsonpass #laketahoe #backcountry #avalancheterrain #avalanche #snow #windslab #stormslab #SnowScience

  9. Great crew for the Shasta Mountain Guides Level 1 avalanche class this weekend. We found deep snow and interesting conditions on the mountain.

  18. I guess I should write an #introduction as well:

Slightly absent-minded dog-owner who happened to study #CompSci for five years. I ended up as an engineer and natural hazards forecaster (lake ice right now) at an Norwegian gov agency.

I try to learn things all the time, currently I'm trying to get more practical experience in #SnowScience as well as studying undergrad #History at uni.

If I post my own content it will probably be of snow, ice, dogs or drone shots, most probably all at once.
