  1. #WakeForest University based Big Data Cluster Collaborator Lauren Lowman studies what happens to plants when there's a drought, after a wildfire, or just how they're reacting to the ongoing #ClimateCrisis.

In this clip from an interview at the 2023 American Geophysical Annual Fall Meeting Lowman talks a bit about the struggle to keep scientific detachment when the thing you're studying is affecting the community you care about.

  9. #AGU23 Tang (LBNL): Carbon use efficiency of microbes through the lense of thermal efficiency. There is a relationship between cue and uptake rate that is often not represented but thermodynamically required. We need to be more careful as a community to preserve these trade-offs.

    #MicrobialModel #SoilBGC

  10. #AGU23 Bloom (UFlorida): NWT Canada moving from Black Spruce to Jack Pine due to fire frequency. Pyrogenic carbon less susceptible to decay => model this! Was expecting pyrogenic carbon to compensate for fire driven losses. We saw losses in total carbon stocks across the board instead.

  11. #AGU23 Koven (LBNL): Leads and lags of CO2. Peak warming delay either leads/lags emissions depending on parameters. Are there diff in ecosystem response to pos/neg/zero emissions? Simple memory model for land response to full sim response => lag time ~9yrs for pos but less good for transition (still good fit). We need to train simple models on range of mitigation simulations.

  12. Abigail Rec is based at the University of #Vermont and presented at #AGU23 about understanding how variations in river flow influence is crucial to stream ecosystem processes.

Rec's #fieldwork occurred at the #Toolik Field Station in Alaska and examined how thawing permafrost is changing the ecosystem in the area.

It wasn't all work and in this conversation she described her first experience seeing a sunset in the #Arctic.

  15. Zhu (Iowa State U): Drainage of wetland prairie in Iowa led to ag land. How does drainage system (intensity & spacing) affect N2O in context of ag systems. Field flux measurements and depth flux measurements => fertilizer pulses N2O flux MUCH (x10+) bigger then freeze/thaw pulse + no drain increases N2O emissions. N2O in subsoil is inverse from surface emissions ? possibly due to microbial community anoxic conditions. Drainage reduces N2O emissions by 8 kg ha-1 yr-1.

  16. Wednesday, early afternoon posters at
MR31B-0084 Effects of melt-rock interactions on deformation fabrics and rock physical properties in the shallow mantle lithosphere
James Kirkpatrick presenting, but this is the the M.Sc. work of Arvid Gonzalez (now core-logging in n. QC). Other authors are myself and Caroline Seyler (U. Minnesota).

Arvid found that infiltrating mafic melt reduces the preserved strain in mantle olivine.

  17. #AGU23 Crow (UHawaii): Project to design and pilot implementation of climate-smart on Hawai'i - big diverse project! Holistic framework approach includes kanaka 'oiwi (Native Hawaiian) scholars to achieve meaningful climate benefits built on place-based equity. Soil modeling Hawai`i is under-developed => new nested modeling approach. Soil health is beyond carbon modeling => new soil health index accounts for ag history and soil mineralogy.

  21. Here's one of the slides from my presentation yesterday at #AGU23, featuring the research of Rebecca Chapman.

She used functional PCA, a statistical method very suited to time series data to extract common trends and patterns in data. It is particularly robust to data gaps, which we have many of in our cave hydrology data

If functional PCA sounds like a technique you can use, Rebecca's research is available as a pre-print and the code is online on GitHub. Links are in the image below.

  22. University of Alabama based Arial Shogren presented about under-researched shoulder seasons in #Alaska, times between winter/spring, summer/fall during the American Geophysical Annual Fall Meeting.

Data for this research comes from the remote Toolik Field Site and in this conversation recorded at #AGU23 Shogren describes how the expansion of remote work which was spurred by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has increased access to the #Toolik Environmental Data Center.

  24. #AGU23 Torn (Berkley Lab): Soil temperature response persist over ~10yr of field warming. Whole soil 4C to 1m deep, working on year 10; does not warm plants. Monthly collar respiration. Seeing a 30% increase in warmed vs control plots w/ annual variation; hard to see trend. Expanded sites and saw similar trends => unlikely to be a legacy site effect.

  25. #AGU23 Wood (USDA-FS): Field warming in tropical forest TRACE in Puerto Rico, (+4C, soil respiration auto-chambers). Slope significantly mattered (!!! 1 order of magnitude). First, convince ourselves high flux was real => Lots of work for a "Yep". Root biomass and respiration declined but biomass and heterotrophic respiration did increase even with declining Q10 in warmed plots. Need to move beyond Q10 for tropical warming.

  26. #AGU23 McMillian (UToledo): All frozen soils are not equal. 3mth -2C and -6C incubation with respiration tracked followed by a 1wk incubation gradient 2C to 10C. Colder pre-incubation temperatures respired more carbon during 1wk thaw and effect stronger with higher temperatures. Did chemistry OM changes (more simple carbon forms).
