What We Love About Critical Zone Research: Nancy Weinheimer - University of Wyoming
Discovering more about how life and soil interact fuels the imagination of Nancy Weinheimer member of the #CriticalZone Collaborative Network @bedrockzone, one of nine clusters in the CZCN along with the #BigData Cluster.
We spoke to her at the American Geophysical Union fall meeting in December 2022. #AGU22

Outtake from illustrations we use in posts about #AGU22 sessions. This one was one of the ways #Midjourney responded when prompted to describe the #CriticalZone.

Design floods are modeling tool used by #CivilEngineers to plan how to build communities in areas that are hydrologically active.
Design floods are also very useful for #EnvironmentalScience research. At #AGU22 last year #UniversityOfVermont-based and Cluster collaborator Scott Lawson presented about work in this area: https://bit.ly/3KTuj9O

There's a lot to like about the #CriticalZone. After all, it's the weave of #ComplexSystems that support life on #Earth.
From the #bedrock to the #treetops, it's full of lush plant life, beautiful geologic formations, your garden in the backyard.
But for Eric Parker, based at the University of New Hampshire, who is a hydrologist, there's no question about which part of the Critical Zone is his favorite.

Realised today that the #AGU22 plenaries are publicly available - catching up by starting with Mika Tosca's Art and Science plenary. So good. https://www.agu.org/Fall-Meeting/Pages/Schedule-Events/Keynotes-Plenaries/#tosca

So Will Smith gets away with an Oscar even if he smacks someone on stage, but scientists (@ClimateHuman and @ultracricket) non-violently spreading the word of #ClimateCrisis in #AGU gets expelled and removed from the programme? Strange times indeed.

Researcher Rose Abramoff unfurled a banner during the #AGU22 conference where she was presenting her work. The banner called for researchers to take action for #climate and raise awareness among the general public.
▶️ Dismissed from the conf.
▶️ Removal of already presented work from the proceedings (!)
▶️ Fired

This was at #AGU22 in Chicago in December. For two weeks after the action, I thought I might get fired as well. "I knew that I could face retaliation. But inaction during this critical time will have far greater consequences."

Hum, AGU, I don't need a location "whose practices and policies align with my beliefs". I need one whose policies and laws don't endanger myself or any other attendees for who they are. I don't care whether they align with my beliefs. I care whether they're a danger to someone who eg. runs into a medical or administrative issue while there. (I added that in my survey.)

Léa Bonnefoy—Cassini radar provides an interesting view of the Selk Crater region on Saturn's moon Titan, where NASA Dragonfly mission will explore. Radar dark regions = organic sand. Radar bright regions = rough, fractured, water ice. #AGU22 🪐

Back from #AGU22. Had a recorder lesson early this morning (via the web). Filed expenses. Filled my home study's fuel tank. Signed paperwork for a (small, but important) promotion. Have clear priorities for this week. Winter break starts Friday.

So #AGU22 is over, and many of us are coming home with the 'sniffles'. Good idea to get tested for #COVID .
That bug surely shook hands with me at the meeting. I just hope it paid that outrageous meeting registration fee too.
Nature just posted about how such meetings should start tracking post-meeting infections, so that future meeting goers know the true risk.

Cruising into the winter break and I’m still figuring out what to post on Mastodon. I really appreciate the ability to write longer form posts, and I want to respect that this is, in fact, a different platform than Twitter.
I also left Twitter last year around April, and, honestly, haven’t felt a pressing need to post a whole lot 😅
But here are some things I’ve been pondering:
1. Post #AGU22 musings
2. Video game musings
3. DEI stuff
4. Neotoma and #openscience stuff
5. All of the above -

Exciting news! We have 3️⃣ new #LadiesofLandsat leaders who we will highlight this month on #LoLManuscriptMonday.
Today we feature Sarah Schenkein, who helps with our #Landsat9 trading cards & represented us at #AGU22. Be sure to connect with her! #EOChat
Last week, Sarah presented about #LadiesofLandsat with Matilda Anokye at the Google Earth booth at #AGU22 with support from Kate Fickas! Thanks for all your efforts ladies; we’re honoured to work with you!

It was such a pleasure to see so many familiar faces and meet new colleagues at #AGU22 who are working on compound climate/weather extreme events and multi-risk! It's always inspiring to be around so many dedicated and passionate scientists working towards a better understanding and management of these complex challenges.
A special thanks to Risk-KAN for helping this #AGU side tradition continue.

#AGU22 was amazing but I am exhausted and need to focus on my family.
I hope everyone has a restful and peaceful holiday season. You all deserve it. The world deserves it.

I had such a fantastic time learning and presenting at #AGU22 😁
It was the largest conference I’ve ever attended and first in person #conference post pandemic! I learned SO much and met SO many talented and wonderful people 🤩 #AGU is a truly fab and supportive #community 😍 -
The post-conference trip home from #AGU22 is a strange balance of melancholic decompressing after an intense 5 days and happy anticipation for year-end break from office and class work.

My student, Jangho Lee, gave a great talk at #AGU22 about temperature-related deaths as the climate warms. Paper (hopefully) coming soon!
