  1. For International Mountain Day, we have one simple request:

What's the best photo you've taken of your favourite mountain? 🤔

For our social media man, Ian, it's this sunrise shot of Tryfan in Eryri on his 40th birthday. No matter what angle, Tryfan just looks stupendous. 🤩

    What about you?

  3. But in the climbing ecstasy of thought,
Ere consummation, ere the final peak,
    Come hours like this…

  4. Some fun memories. In Norway I spent a bunch of time poking around mountains on Kvaløya, practicing my snowcraft, exploring with friends and speaking with the mountains on some solo missions.

I sure miss it. And I'm so grateful I got to go there. Life has been pretty bittersweet in the few years since - however, it's always something I'll remember...

Let's celebrate the mountains extra today. For me with a picture of my favorite mountain, the Finsteraarhorn (4274 meter in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland).

  8. Happy International Mountain Day.

Far fewer summits this year, but a lot more exploring passes through the hills. So not so many impressive pictures of pointy things.

    1. Glen Avon, Cairngorms.
    2. Lochaber, looking towards the Mamores.
    3. Geal-Chàrn, Ardverikie.

In #KeisukeKinoshita's highly stylised 楢山節考 [The Ballad of Narayama] (1958), a starving community has come to the agreement that the elders approaching the age of seventy are to be carried up the mountain Narayama to die. The day prior to the mountain's festival, sixty-nine year old Orin prepares to leave, carried by her son Tatsuhei ☞ write.underworld.fr/settima/yo

  10. On mountains.social every day is a mountain day. But today it is a really special one, as it is International Mountain Day. And this year it even falls on #MountainMonday!

"December 11, "International Mountain Day", was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003. The General Assembly "encouraged the international community to organize events at all levels on that day to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development."

As December is the month where all kinds of sites are sending their "Wrapped" of the year, I thought International Mountain Monday was a fine occasion to introduce #MountainsWrapped2023.

Below are my four pictures which have special memories from the mountains in 2023. Read the alt-text for more information on them.

    White Mountains
    New Hampshire

    My favorite hike.

This is from 1 of the 7 or 8 times I made this climb to Mount Lafayette (view is from Mount Lafayette summit).

This section of the trail is part of the Appalachian Trail and goes on over several mountains.

  17. Why is there rubbish at the top of Wales’ highest mountain? Visitors should have respect for the mountain but more people seems to mean more plastic waste. See @[email protected] latest project at: c-js.uk/3H9I5mC on #InternationalMountainDay #MountainsMatter
