  1. On this day in 1942, Warrant Officers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš ambushed
    Reinhard Heydrich and attempted to assassinate him. He was wounded and would later die in hospital.

    The reprisals were brutal and swift, and eventually led to the complete
    destruction of the village of Lidice and Ležáky.

    My random Wikipedia article of the day was Milices Patriotiques, who were a 22,000-strong communist group and part of the Belgian resistance in the Second World War. Which sounded really interesting, but their article was tragically short so that's pretty much all I have to say about them!

  3. HMS Spartan was a British light cruiser commissioned on 12 July 1943. In Jan 1944, Spartan was stationed off Anzio during Operation Shingle. On 29 Jan she was attacked by German aircraft using a guided bomb, probably a Henschel Hs 293 radio-controlled glide bomb.   7. On this day in 1942, British troops invaded Madagascar. The operation proved the usefulness of tank landing ships (LSTs), which were to be widely used in future invasions. It also featured dummy paratroopers, which were more famously used during the invasion of Normandy in 1944.
