  2. What the heck is wrong with :matrix: ? We're looking for a platform for communication during a larger measurement campaign and from the featureset concluded with either or Matrix (subgroups, archivable, mobile/desktop/web clients, etc.).

But the app and app just won't even list the rooms in our space (on matrix.org, maybe that's the problem...), they just load forever. No problem in element web or . What. the. heck.

  3. Does anyone know why Matrix doesn't notify you when a picture message is received? It's super annoying. :corgi_wtf1: And I say Matrix instead of naming a client because every single client refuses to notify for it so I imagine it's something in the spec.

  4. Why is #Matrix so bad?

I really want to love Matrix, but it's terrible. Let's not get into that it's more #IRC than Discord, and there's a reason why #Discord, despite its drawbacks managed to get such a big mind share, that's beside the point, but relevant and we'll come back to how.

Many different things I have installed offer instant messages as a way to follow communities, get support, etc and I really don't wanna use something I use personally or I have issues with due to whatever corporate fuckeries they undertake. This means I generally want to avoid #Telegram, #Signal or #Discord.

As a result, I ended up leaning into using a Matrix. It feels like the best of the rest and that's because it's lead by a bunch of old men who don't understand why people prefer Discord over IRC.

Anyway, what made me really commit was that I finally found a client that could do multiple accounts. So I had #Faraday installed and though a bit temperamental, things were working fine.

One month ago, Faraday updated, because it's forked from an old version of #Schildichat and shit was outdated. So after some prompting the developer updated it a bit. It broke the client completely and wouldn't open. I impatiently waited and one month later a new update was released that still never fixed my issue. I thought, no way can the developer and #FDroid be that collectively incompetent, which means it's probably on my end. So I cleared storage on my other phone and the app opened. Hooray!

So I ran to my main phone and reset storage. Finally Faraday opened and then it began… Or didn't. Because once I logged in and it crashed, as it does, it was stuck on the Initial Sync, waiting for a server response. I didn't wanna be impatient, so I waited and waited and waited and nothing changed. Clear cache, clear storage, uninstall and reinstall, nothing changed.

So I'm thinking something has to be wrong, so eventually I said let me check with a stock app, so I grab #ElementX and log in and suddenly I get this stuff about authentication and I'm like WTF?

Now I swear down. I hate #privacy zealots. If you work in software, get them away from your decision making process. I don't dispute they have valuable input, but it's at the cost of the end product, every single time.

So I'm there trying to authenticate a device and I'm stressing because I just want all my old chats back. These aren't even private chats, they're public chats. I just don't wanna have to go hunting down room addresses again. But Matrix is making this harder than it needs to be and seem scarier than it needs to be.

In the end I realised that I didn't have another device to authenticate me and I didn't have the encryption codes saved. I ended up trying to circumvent it by using a web based client, which didn't work. And after some anxiety, I said fuck it and reset and then I'm finally in and find all chats preserved. But now at the bottom of all the rooms it says it's not encrypted and I'm like, fuck!

Turns out this has nothing to do with the encryption before. I found this out later. Anyway, so I'm trying to authenticate Element X using the browser and that refuses to work, because switching screens is bad, so I'm forced to use two devices. Give me strength! And then hilariously the Element X doesn't want to authenticate anything else. Yay, you're useful.

So my question is, when all these old arse developers who have clearly dreamed the same dream for fifty years were sitting around, why didn't anyone ask why it needed to be so hard. Secret agents are using Signal not Matrix. Even if you were adamant, why couldn't you just use a #TOTP? Problem solved, less friction. Why_can't_you_just_be_normal.gif

Anyway, now that I'm back in, I try Faraday again and it's still not working. I'm forced to give it up, I actually didn't mind the #UX and the icon is better than Schildichat. So I search for a new client with multi account support and the only choices are cross platform clients, ugh. I end up going with #FluffyChat and the UX isn't great, which is part and parcel of anything developed to run across platforms. I would rather something someone made for Android with love and understanding every time. But alas.

Even then, I had to log into the web to authenticate, because for some reason we can't just have a #2FA TOTP pop-up. Ugh!

Oh and the mind share thing was because they were targeting modern needs as opposed to trying to recreate an out of favour platform or bury people with terrible UX.

  5. ElementX is *so* much faster than the current stable versions of Element and its various soft forks (I'm currently using SchildiChat).

As I've said before, I'm guessing it will take another 6-12 months for all the Matrix 2.0 upgrades to be rolled out and fully stabilized in the various app and server software. But if ElementX performance is anything to go by, the new and improved Matrix ecosystem will be well worth an open-minded test.

  10. @jngorria @Hovenduck

  11. The #librem11 is great so far, I've been giving #pureos a shot since it is #purism flagship distro -- there are things that I think need improvement -- like (a) some of the pureos apps are not as good as their #flatpak counterparts -- like for example flathub has #geany 2.0 while pureos is still 1.38 0 -- or (b) the native `gnome-calculator` app for some reason doesn't respect "Dark Theme" mode in #phosh -- same with #gedit -- the flatpak version needs to be installed by console (same with #epiphany).

    I'm writing this from #tuba and i much prefer it to android #fediverse apps. #parabolic #xournal++ #gnome-maps #libreoffice #krita #gimp #discord #gimp #krita #mypaint all seem to be working just fine.

Having had no prior experience with #tablet sized devices with a keyboard, it wasn't obvious to me how the magnetic cover snaps to the back of the tablet in a λ kind of shape.

Contact sync with #nextcloud works as expected, and #geary email seems like a good fit for this size device, though I typically prefer #thunderbird -- I'm going to give that a try later.

#chatty seems clogged up when I try to login to my #matrix -- though I had a lot of rooms and person to person chats. I am thinking of installing the #flatpak version to see if that fixes it, but then that would seem odd to not use pureos version. It sometimes shows my rooms and contacts double in the left sidebar. Though I have been impressed when using my #librem5 and #postmarketos version of the app as I am new to it. It's a bit rough but seems to have come a long way.

Overall the device is pretty snappy, I have 6 apps open as I write this and it is doing just fine.

#cheese takes photos and videos just fine. I tried to get the #gnome "snapshot" "camera" app running but it doesn't automatically detect the cameras. I am not sure if this is because it is a flatpak or not. I enabled the permissions in #flatseal

I strongly recommend a wireless bluetooth mouse. I am using a inexpensive logitech m535 and it works great. Wifi, no complaints there.

I do think that the default apps in the pureos repos should either be updated or omitted as the default software source, suchas the #libreoffice package when intalled has a theme that makes it look like it's from the 1990s whereas the flatpak version is very nice.

I've been watching #linuxmobile over the last decade and I am presently surprised how far purism and the #linux and #foss people have come. Excellent work @ all. I think this is a great device to do development on as it runs much faster than my #pinephone and even my librem5. And it's not qemu, and the device seems easy enough to reflash -- one thing I especially like about the librem5 aswell when compared to other processes like fumbling through pmbootstrap to reflash #android to #lineageos
I am still trying to figure out what the best music app for this device is -- I do like #lollypop

Internal sound quality isn't amazing, but I wouldn't call it bad either when comparing to some of the other small form factor devices with mobile speakers I've owned. It's fine as a fallback but you are better off with a bluetooth headset to complement it or a tiny portable bluetooth speaker.

Some options like "scale apps to fullscreen" are not easy to find so I had to set a few options in dconf-editor. I think there is a app called "Mobile Settings" that might have it. Not all apps have the dialogs constrained inside the screen dimensions like the Geany Open dialog for example (which is understandable as this app hasn't targeted mobile or tablet yet as far as I know.)

I use the device to watch online videos, for instant messaging via matrix via #element / #schildichat and it does just fine. I haven't tested it with #zoom or anything but from what I've seen I'm sure it'd do just fine.

Epiphany "Install Website as App" is a great feature -- I have several I've added to my App Menu, Epiphany has always had trouble though being on the lean side. I do wish that I had this option on #firefox ESR, in any case I've just switched to #librewolf again as I prefer it.

I am interesting in comparing phosh to #gnomemobile as I might want to use that instead someday. I have used #plasmamobile and it's hard to put into words in some ways I like it more than phosh, and in other ways I am just not used to the apps -- some apps are just better out of box like their notes app, I like that they have a flashlight button in their top menu. Their UX scaling and fluidity is really good. I am glad that everything is doing such a good job and friendly competition will drive each side to keep improving.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this device on day 1, but I am glad I did. And as I don't have a laptop or like laptops or conventional smartphones very much for me this device is kindof a big deal that I can do basic #linux and #it things on the go along with communication and such without all the headache of android, ios or windows which is not a option for me as linux is just better.

If you think about the #privacy space -- the #libremboot #codeboot is pretty revolutionary to start to see these kinds of firmwares in all in one hardware. And of course this automatic disk encryption is a nice bonus though not something I need as a enthusiast unless maybe I want to travel with the device and protect my data.

People will have different criticisms, and opinions, and I may be easy-going but overall my opinion is that I am pleased with the utility the device offers and I think any rough edges will only get better in the software over time. I may switch the default distro eventually to do some more research and exploring in the linux mobile space -- but it's a little unclear who the big names are worth checking out. I did postmarketos for a while but I feel like the QA is a little all over the place and their package manager is a little difficult to use when I want to check the available software versions, and the phone space is such a mess to try to document and navigate if you are trying to use a previously android device.

I'm also interested in how the #starlabs #starlite5 will compare and contrast in the future. Having used this device I can't recommend something in this size without a keyboard and mouse for more complex usage, I didn't really undestand that the Librem11 keyboard is wired at first, but now that I have figured it out I prefer the simple tech vs overcomplication.

All in all, I think they have a winner, and I expect to get a lot of use out of this as a side rig to my main desktop. Would buy again, and excited to see all the software improvements coming downstream.

  13. Oh man, I feel your pain.

A could if my most prized Linux collection possessions are the very two first releases of Yggdrasil Plug and Play Linux (LGX) and the first two print editions of "The Linux Bible - the GNU Testament". I was a bit startled to find out what those would actually cost me off i ever wanted to replace them.

The other thing I've had an alert in for about ten years now is a "Memotech" keyboard for the #Timex_Sinclair computer 🖥️ I found one in the past twenty years and they wanted over two hundred dollars for it. In hindsight, I should have jumped on it, but I figured I'd find another one for twenty bucks or so. You live and learn 🙂

You know what? I should boost your inquiry for the Walnut Creek Slackware CDs into the SDF Mastodon server! There's serious #retro_computing folks there, and they maintain a comouter history museum.

I've been a member there for eons. You can't get an account there on our mastodon server unless you're an actual SDF member, but I'll be happy to boost your request there.

Okay #Matrix. In very liberal terms, Matrix is considered by many to be part of the #Fediverse. In more strict interpretations it isn't. Matrix is it's own (and optionally secured by e2ee) communications protocol including chat via text, voice, and video, for one on one and groups - kind of like Slack or discord or IRC but with a very privacy centric focus and built with #FOSS. i.e., it doesn't run on #ActivityPub protocol, but it's very popular with many millions of users.

Here's a good homeserver to join, managed by an #OpenBSD and Matrix developer who's a really nice guy. NOTE: He hosts on his home network so occasionally it goes offline for an hour or so when his ISP's DHCP server changes his IP address.

It's s very performant and well managed server. You can signup at this link:

    https://bancino.net/element/#/welcome

There's an easy to read explanation of everything here:

    https://joinmatrix.org/guide/#get-started

I would recommend that you start off with the #Element client if you're using #Android, which you can get here at F-Droid:

    https://f-droid.org/en/packages/im.vector.app/

There are a lot of guys Matrix clients, like #SchildiChat, #FkuffyChat, a good #WeeChat plugin if you use that for IRC, #Nehko, and others; but Element has ALL features is completely cross-platform - Android, iPhone, #Linux, Mac, Web, and Windows. So it's a good client to start with.

Now, about a third of all Matrix users have accounts on the Matrix Foundation's #Homeserver, and although they recommend you choose from among three thousands of other homeservers, you are welcome to create an account there too.

Stay away from their main Matrix room though - there are several thousands of people in there and can bog your system if your machine had limited resources.

The main site to get Element for any type of computer, phone, or operating system is here:

    https://element.io/

    I hope that helps!

  14. Bisher:
    #Element und #Schildichat starten nicht.
    #Fluffychat macht einen guten Job
    #Fractal sieht auch gut aus
#Nheko macht auch bisher keine Probleme
    #NeoChat will wieder nicht
    #Syphon dagegen läuft 💪

Das bedeutet NICHT dass die Clients sicher mit torsocks nutzbar sind - ich habe nur getestet ob sie sich starten lassen und ein einloggen möglich ist.

  15. Please update your #matrix clients: matrix.org/blog/2021/09/13/vul

If you are using versions from f-droid.org, I recommend to switch to a different one, at least until they catch up with building the fixed versions (it's unclear how long that will take. Might be one or multiple days).

An updated version of #Schildichat can instead be installed from the author's #FDroid repo here: schildi.chat/android/install-f

Updated (FOSS) versions of #ElementAndroid are currently not yet available.
