  1. Managed to accidentally hose #TomTom app with an update a few nights ago (there may have been a bug in latest version), so reluctantly tried out #GoogleMaps on #AndroidAuto

Privacy issues aside, its barely usable - #UI is cluttered, #speed indicators hard to see, no beep or other noise if you go over limit and its quite frankly not even that safe to look at when #driving

#TomTom app is now fixed, way better and worth the £20 for the years subscription

  6. #Navi #GNSS software update - in the end I stuck with #TomTom Go (the paid one), although I did like #OsmAnd and had the paid version its way slower to pick up your vehicle speed from GNSS than TomTom and lacks real time #trafficinfo - whilst #OrganicMaps and #CoMaps still seem to be arguing about how to implement speed display on #AndroidAuto

#TomTom app behaves pretty much exactly like my old standalone navi, its a familiar, usable #UI and has accurate real time speed display plus 3 warning beeps the moment you go over the limit (which is often main reason I want this software, especially in familiar areas where I can navigate without the GNSS (as I grew up having to do this when younger!)

  22. Nissan’s cars in Japan have excellent #CarNavi aka #SatNav, eg far better junction display than in UK (presumably far more fine detail in the mapping to report this).

The English mode is pretty good too - except it only lets you search for addresses in romaji & doesn’t seem to have everything indexed properly, as it often fails to find what we want!

Cue manual pan and zoom on smartphone map & car touchscreen to find the place to go to as a rather cumbersome workaround 😬

  36. Got the route bar back on #TomTom Go for #AndroidAuto - After reading multiple forum threads (some with posts in in English, Dutch and German all in the same thread!) - had to sideload Android Auto APK 14.6.652454-release (and then turn off auto-updates so it doesn't get clobbered) and the route bar reappears..

  41. I somewhat reluctantly installed paid version of #TomTom Go app on #Android (it was on discount, probably as TomTom are on the ropes) I've got a few long drives coming up and #OSM lacks warnings of the average speed cameras on #A12 in #Essex (alas, I have 0 idea how to accurately add them or if you could even get the data from #NationalHighways (presumably it is possible as TomTom has them)

It works fairly well (other than missing route bar on #AndroidAuto which TomTom and Google are struggling to fix) and does pick up my POIs from existing Tomtom cloud.

I'm not sure of the future of the company, they laid off loads of their staff (probably where #MagicEarth, also based in NL is getting their devs from) and their website and update servers barely work. #GNSS #satnav
