  1. First purchase of 2026 and it's an exciting one! At least for me. I've discovered a new movie ticket variant of a GBA game. Of course, there's always the possibility of information being buried in a corner of the internet or something, but here it is. Arthur and the Invisibles: The Game.

The sticker is on the plastic wrap of the game, which may explain why it's harder to come by. Even if you kept boxes back in the day, it's likely you threw away the shrink wrap on the boxes.

The only two movie ticket variants I'm missing are Monster House and (allegedly since I've never seen any photos of it myself) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But this only really says to me that there could always be more variants out there that just aren't very widely known or remembered and that's always exciting.

  2. I am clearly not cultured enough to understand these. National Velvet confused me so much because I already got "National" and was expecting a person title, not a media title. Also Dizzy was my final puzzle and I missed out on $25,000 boo.

National Velvet: A movie from 1944

    Dizzy Gillespie: A jazz musician

I might play Wheel of Fortune some more on my Pocket instead soon.

  3. Bought a copy of Wheel of Fortune for the Gameboy recently and started playing it to test it out. But wow that certainly is an introduction to the game.

  4. Mom, can we have Gallade?

No, we have Gallade at home.

    Gallade at home:

By the way, this is yet another time where I can't find the original art at all, I tried reverse image searching the art on the cart (that's Meganium and Typhlosion mega stretched at the bottom) but nothing shows up.

  5. Something unusual I purchased recently. I'm sure some people out there know about this already but I've never seen this bundle before.

  6. To take a break from Perfect Silver, I'd like to take a quick look at this Taiwanese translation hack of Pokemon Yellow. It appears to be an early version of a lesser known Chinese translation hack. I hope I can find a copy of the possibly newer version to compare this with.

A fellow collector informed me that this translation was actually produced by Vast Fame. Now, I don't know about that personally but I do trust them as they know a lot more than me.

On the Analogue Pocket it boots in black and white... which actually makes sense as the Japanese version of the game (which this is built on) doesn't have the same GBC enhancements the other region releases have. Thankfully I can apply a palette to it. However, if you load it in the SGB core you can fully see the rainbow-ish sparkles in the opening "credits".

  7. I've never seen a game, official or otherwise, that did this. There's a square hole in the board and the chip is kind of just hovering in it. What's up with that?

  8. Can someone tell me where this Bellossom featured on this multicart menu comes from? It doesn't seem to be from the end credits of GS or the battle sprites. Is this from Puzzle Challenge or something? Somewhere else?

By the way, no Pokemon games on this. Seems it was fairly common to use Pokemon to advertise multicarts because of how popular and recognizable they were.

  9. Another fake pirate translation of Silver. This time it's masquerading as Pikachu Inc. but it's actually just HC Translations again. They even mimicked the title style which is interesting.

Although nothing super super exciting, it is still interesting nonetheless. Is it possible the people who made this made the fake Vida Translations Silver as well?

It's also too bad that I'm unable to extract it off the multicart it came on.

  10. Well I've now defeated Lance, but I do intend to go through Kanto at some point. I'm not sure if it'll be immediately, I kind of want to take a break from trying to get through an RPG (even one as familiar and documented as Pokemon) in a language I cannot read, let alone one that is undocumented due it being an unofficial translation.

At least as far as I've seen, everything has been normal apart from being able to teach Sudowoodo Fly which is amazing. It's not been used for battling all too much but the flying tree has been my mascot for this playthrough.

That's enough Pokemon monster emerald 2008 for the time being.

  11. I know it's just one, two, and three in Chinese, but it just looks funny that it's just a bunch of horizontal lines in the elevator menu.

  12. Someone please explain why the hell Sudowoodo can learn Fly in this translation hack but Farfetch'd can't?? I guess I'm flying around on the back of a tree now.

EDIT: To clarify an error I made, turns out Farfetch'd did learn Fly but somehow I didn't notice. This doesn't change the fact that Sudowoodo somehow got the ability to fly in the bootleg.

  13. So the hack I'm playing seems to be limited to two characters per Pokemon name due to screen space which certainly makes everything a challenge.

That being said, I'd like to bring your attention to two of my favorite Pokemon, Espeon and Umbreon and their bootleg names.

Espeon is 天天 which translates to "everyday", but I'm assuming it's meant to play off of 白天 which is "daytime".

However Umbreon appears to be 雷鸟 which translates to "thunder bird". I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean, it doesn't sound like the English or Japanese names. It's clearly not a bird (and if you know the games it's a Dark type). Is this supposed to be a direct reference to a Thunderbird? I have no clue.

  14. The Quick Claw apparently translates as 灼灼灼, which according to Google Translate means "Burning". Maybe it's a text representation of flame car decals.

    #Nintendo | #Gameboy | #RetroGameCollecting | #GameCollection | #BootlegGaming | #Pokemon | #PokemonGold

  15. A lot of numbers in this translation hack use the original numbers which look tiny next to the larger Chinese characters. I haven't been paying special attention, but it looks like exclamation marks after Chinese characters are larger and after numbers are the normal sized ones.

Also I'm not sure why they put an exclamation mark after Magnitude?

  16. Been continuing to play Pokemon monster emerald 2008. There isn't as much fuckery with the names glitching, but there is still some. Context: I have not nicknamed any of my Pokemon at all.

For example, the first character in your first Pokemon's name when the party is full gets replaced with a "?" in the party menu (though I've seen it not happen while switching out after knocking an opponent's Pokemon out).

Another example on this same screen is that Quilava's second character in his name is usually this weird set of vertical lines. Why? I don't know.

Sidenote: I've never caught a Ditto in Gen 2 since I never try completing the Pokedex in the older games and it's relative rarity. It's got a unique sprite (unsurprisingly) and honestly it's kinda goofy.

  17. I have been playing Pokemon monster emerald 2008 (read: Pokemon Gold) and I've forgotten just how round Ledyba is in Gen 2.

  18. Well, it looks like the names in this version do get covered up by other on-screen information.

Good news though, Nidoran-M and Nidoran-F are not the same name! Bad news though, Nidoran-M has the same name as Bulbasaur.

  19. I purchased this Chinese copy of Pokemon Gold with the intent to play through it similarly to Yellow.

However, the ROM doesn't work in any emulator I've tried (including hhugboy) and won't work on my Everdrive either. It also won't hold a save (which would be pretty unreliable given it's apparent age anyways) so that's another idea dead in the water for now.

However I'd still like to point out some very early stuff:

The title screen is hilarious because they neglected to removed some pixels from the Japanese title. But hey, recycling 金 is a great idea since it means Gold in both languages. Problem is that it only draws more attention to how bare bones your translated title is.

You're able to access the naming screen... but you're really really limited.

  20. I purchased a Chinese copy of the infamous Telefang "hack", Pokemon Diamond.

Considering the Chinese version of Jade actually looks like the cart sticker, this is not what I expected.

EDIT: I've been informed there are two different versions of Pokemon Diamond in Chinese which explains this pretty well.

  21. Happy Australian Fun Day! Received a package today with what (I personally think) is the only Australian exclusive GBA game. Sort of.

Like most versions of this game, they likely had to change some of the pop culture questions within the game to be Australian themed (which means *exclusive content*). So it counts.

Anyways, this is also an interesting box as the cartridge tray usually has the game flipped on its side, but not this time. You can even almost fit an OG GameBoy cart inside too. Also look at how thin the manual is. Not much explanation needed for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire I suppose haha.

  22. These two copies of Happy Feet look the same right? Wrong, that tiny little one dollar A.R.V (I assume average retail value) difference on the front is the only significant difference I noticed. This is because of the difference in price for a movie ticket in USD and CAD. It was pretty fun to find this difference as now I can keep an eye out for any similar ones.

  23. Obscure oversized goodness. Culture Brain published 7 "Twin Series" games but only the first 2 in the series got these comically oversized boxes and trays in order to show both games on the back equally.

They also released some of them with stickers on the front? It covers the fact that it's CERO - All.

...Maybe I'll get more eventually to try to get all the stickers but we'll see. Priority is to find the second game which contains Oshare Princess 4.

  24. I only noticed just recently that the Movie Magic vouchers are different in Canada and The United States. Now, that's something that seems quite obvious but I was unaware they even sold any of the movie ticket box variants in Canada at all. My copy of Happy Feet for the GBA showed stickers that sealed the box directly which makes it seem like they had to package the Canadian ones on their own which is due to the different then usual voucher needed.

Now I want to find more of these.

  25. This arrived in the mail last night. It might seem weird but I've been looking for this for (I think) 2 to 3 years. Usually you only find the cart and/or manual online. The only other box I saw was included in apx. $100 eBay lot and I was like no thanks.

I should of just picked it up at the time I saw someone put up a bunch of sealed copies but I'm stubborn in that I don't buy sealed unless it's a good deal over the complete copy. Well, I finally got it opened.

It comes with an episode of the show and is a unique cart compared to the original, kind of like the Strawberry Shortcake Special Edition. As you may expect, the quality of the video is not so great just like the GBA Video carts, but a great bonus for a kid back in the day.
