  2. Kanto is rapidly running out of gym battles, we have two left. But, we must deal with Blaine before I discuss the nonsense that was Blue.

Poor Blaine is found, crying, in Seafoam Islands. A volcano wiped out Cinnabar Island, leaving only the Pokemon Center standing, convenient.

Well, sorry buddy, I am here to give you more to cry about.

Houndoom was my weapon of choice here. Sadly, Houndoom doesn't learn Crunch until level 52, and my limit is 50. So biting Blaine will have to suffice.

Of Blaine's three pokemon (seriously. Why did Brock have so many?!), the real threat here is Magcargo, a fire/rock type with the dangerously inaccurate Rock Slide.

Turns out biting molten snails is an effective means of dealing with them. Dark moves are not resisted by Rock, and Dark moves count as special attacks, apparently!

This battle was over ridiculously quickly, so quick I forgot to take a mid battle screenshot!

That just leaves Blue for the Kanto gyms now.

  3. Right, we're back with some more Kanto adventures. Apologies for not putting this out sooner.

We only have two more type-based gyms to deal with, so let's start with Sabrina. A Psychic type gym.
Psychic types were ridiculously powerful in the first Gen, so much so that they brought in Dark types as a hard counter.

Originally, I was going to field something like Hypno, a Pokemon with respectable attack for a Psychic type, as well as the attack boosting move meditate!

Then I remembered Lugia was a Psychic/Flying! Why is it Psychic? God knows, but it makes it viable for the achievement.
As I am playing Silver, I have access to Lugia's unique attack Aeroblast, a 110 power flying type move, which would be keyed off Lugia 90 base attack stat.

Aeroblast also features a higher than normal crit chance, so even with just 5 PP, Lugia was able to breeze through Sabrina's 3 Pokemon alone.

  4. Ummm... I think we should be checking Surge's hard drive.
I appreciate that the player character is supposed to be 11... But little boy? That makes my skin crawl.

Well, I am just glad I am here to lay the smack down then.

I thought I was being smart with having Lanturn for Misty, as it doubles up as a viable choice for Surge!

But it turns out that was unnecessary. Now, Ampharos didn't sweep. In fact, it was quite a close solo battle. Surge has two Electrodes that can use self-destruct, which is a very powerful move. Graciously, we only took and tanked one of those.
It should also be noted that Ampharos is a slow, special attacker with a rather mediocre attack stat. Magneton might have been problematic, as it could resist all my attacks, by Ampharos pulled through. Barely.

But even if Ampharos had fallen, I was confident that Lanturn would be able to finish the fight.

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver #GameboyColor

  5. So, compared to Brock, I was feeling confident with Misty. Even though water types can be quite versatile, they aren't that great against themselves, as most can't learn electric or grass attacks, with the exception of Starmie, who can be taught Thunderbolt.

So Lanturn was the perfect hard counter to her. Even if her Starmie had thunderbolt, Lanturn was not weak to it due to their electric typing.

Even then, Lanturn had Leftovers and a surprising amount of bulk. The biggest cause for concern was Quagsire, a water/ground type. But, as we can see, we finish the fight against Misty with barely a scratch on my lovely Lanturn!

What I will say is, Misty is looking darn cute with that Gen 2 sprite! Or is it just me?

  6. There is something I find absolutely hilarious about this event in Generation 2 of #Pokemon

Before you can challenge Misty at Cerulean gym, you totally have to gate crash her date she is having at Cerulean Cape, by Bill's House.

I feel we have interrupted a bit of a booty call, though I have to wonder why the guy makes himself scarce, unless he really didn't want to be there and we just saved his bacon...?

    #PokemonSilver #GameBoyColor

  7. So, I finally settled on a strategy, and that was to utilise the X-Attacks to boost Aerodactyl's Earthquake power.

I did mess up the first time I tried this, as usually Brock sends out his Rhyhorn after Graveller. But when I led with Aerodactyl, he went straight to Omastar.

I got a lucky critical hit, which resulted in beating Omastar, and I thought I was in for smooth sailing after that.
No. Kabutops knows surf and can also OHKO my pokemon....

So the... 7th battle, I think, against Brock. We set up the X-attacks against his graveller, which was not without risk. Graveller knows Rollout and got two hits on my Aerodactyl.
But after that, Aerodactyl was able to sweep the team with just 9HP because silly me, I forgot to give him the leftovers.

Anyway, with all that said and done, I was reclaimed my Boulder Badge and the Kanto Gym stomp can truly begin!
    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver

  8. This is getting embarrassing...

I have officially handed in my Kanto League Boulder Badge.

Even with support, Don and I have been struggling to defeat Brock of Pewter city.

Now, we are a couple of levels under the level limit, but we are getting mad walled by Brock's Omastar, we haven't even reached Kabutops yet, which my little brother has described as, and I quote, "Rude".

Even Aerodactyl, who has a respectable amount of Special Defense and is only 2x weak to water attacks was OHKO'd by Omaster.

I have another option, because I can utilise items, I can throw down some revives, or even buff Aerodactyl with some X-Attacks, I only need two of them to boost Earthquake's damage by 2x, which should beat Omastar...

Again, as mentioned previously, I watch a lot of Jrose11's Pokemon challenge videos, and he typically doesn't use items in battle (besides hold items), so that is just a further limitation I have put on myself.

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver

  9. Right, I believe I am all ready for the Kanto gyms that require specific types of Pokemon for the RetroAchievements.

I have provided myself some grace on the levels as I don't want to accidentally go over the level limit during the gym battle.

We (the traded) Rhydon with surf for Brock: level limit 45.

Lanturn for Misty: Level limit 47

Ampharos for Surge: Level limit 46

Lugia for Sabrina: Level limit 48

Houndoom for Blaine: Level limit 50.

I chose Ampharos because they are one of my little brother's favourite pokemon, especially Mega Ampharos, with his glorious hair!
Ampharos might be slow for an electric type but has a decent amount of bulk behind them.

Sadly, Houndoom hasn't learnt Crunch yet. I was hoping it would, as I was hoping it would make mincemeat of Blaine. Bite will have to suffice, I guess.

    Anyway, wish me luck, folks!

  10. So, it took several hours to get to this point!

But I have managed to bag the three legendary beasts!
I was getting annoyed with being unable to use repels to make it easier to encounter them, so I trained up a Jynx and made sure she didn't go over level 40.

Annoyingly, the first time I encountered Suicune with Jynx was the time I actually caught them... I'm not bitter about that at all!

With that now done, I can return to Kanto and finish up the gyms.

What? The roaming Kanto Legendary Bird? I mean... *Sigh* I could start looking, I suppose...

EDIT: I just checked, I seem to have been mistaken. I thought one of the Kanto birds was a roaming Pokemon, and you only got one of them depending on which starter you selected.
I may be conflating this with a different game! This is good news for me!

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver

  11. So, I think for this week's #VGMWednesday I am contractually obligated to talk about something from Gen 2 #Pokemon

With this in mind, how could I possibly pick just one track from this generation of Pokemon?! I certainly couldn't cop out a pick a track from the Kanto region, could I?

Going through the OST was a bit of a weird experience because as I was going through the battle music, I came to the conclusion I didn't actually like it that much. Perhaps it is more the Gameboy's sound capabilities doing the tracks a disservice.

Therefore, the thought process was, what track just resonated with me the most, and made me feel I was in Johto.

I settled on the Azalea town and Blackthorn city theme. I can't put my finger on it, but this just hit my nostalgia just right, and I love it so much.
This track comes across quite quaint and peaceful, which I think captures Johto as a region quite nicely.

    #GameboyColor #PokemonSilver #PokemonGold

  12. So, I might have made a mistake.

I spent some time hunting down the Legendary Beasts in #PokemonSilver

A few mistakes in all this. Firstly, my level 50 Haunter prevents me from using the repel trick to help me.
Even with Haunter being level 50, Raikou seems to speed tie my Haunter. So, there is a chance that when I encounter them, they will flee before I can get hypnosis out.

Secondly, I started this incredibly arduous task of catching roaming Pokemon!

I did manage to catch Entei after a bunch of faffing around and chasing my tail.

How on earth I caught all the Beasts as a kid, I will never understand.

  13. So, I had a brainwave, for Janine, I need to use Poison types, and what are Poison weak against? Psychic moves.

Can I combine the two? Of course I can.
    Venomoth!

It learns Psybeam before the level 39 limit. Also, most Poison types are higher in the defense stat than special defense.

So, let's deal with Janine nice and quickly!

Hahaha, I may have miscalculated this...
Let it be known that I am not infallible.

I'll come back with my own Crobat I think...

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver

  14. I think part of the reason why #Pokemon Gen 2 has such a lasting legacy is because it created this sense of world that I can't think of being matched.

Pokemon has had a habit of name dropping other regions in games, NPCs in Kalos saying they are visiting from Hoenn, etc

It's one thing to get these cute little nods, but Gen 2 went a step further, which sure we could chalk up to nostalgia maxing fan service, being able to explore a mostly like for like recreation of the Kanto region.

But it also helps create this congruous world. You are not just exploring a region, you are exploring the world of Pokemon. Even if Johto is just one short surf route away from Kanto.

Besides the surf route, there is also the ship between Olivine and Vermillion and the Magnet Train between Goldenrod and Saffron. It's all world building that makes the two regions feel like a complete unit.

Was this a thinly veiled ramble to justify a Magnet Rail screenshot? I mean... Partially...

    #PokemonSilver

  15. So, because I am trying to knock out another achievement, collecting all the TMs, I wanted to tackle Erika first, as she is one of the only Kanto leaders to give you a TM. I forgot Janine does as well, but oh well.

My original thought was Jumpluff, as it is Grass/Flying. But another Pokemon came to mind as I was looking through my boxes.

Paras/Parasect. A bug/grass type, which would provide a 4x resistance to Erika's grass attacks. Jumpluff would have the same as a Grass/Flying, but Parasect has Slash, a really good normal type move with a high crit rate.

Combined with having Parasect hold Leftovers and being quite tanky, this meant that most of Erika's attacks didn't do enough damage to bypass my healing.

Victreebell was an exception, with Acid, but... This is what the move Spore is for. Victreebell might have been faster, but it was also a deep sleeper.

So with that, Parasect swept the Grass gym.
    Thanks buddy!

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver #RetroAchievements

  16. So, who's left?

Janine, this is a weird one. Because the level limit is 39, she's a ridiculously underpowered gym leader. Either way, Crobat will deal with her.

Sabrina, the level limit is 48, and I was thinking Drowzee/Hypno would be great! Mostly because Hypno has a decent attack stat, which works against pokemon like Alakazam. Until I noticed I didn't have Drowzee...
So I got thinking, who else could I use? Natu/Xatu could be fun. Until I noticed, oh yeah. I captured Lugia! Sweet jesus Lugia would be a great choice, and I can just aeroblast the crud out of Sabrina.

That leaves Blaine. Blaine is simple, I have Typhlosion! It's a great fire type, and he has thunder punch! Which will be a decent move to use as it won't be subject to resistance penalties from Arcanine and Rapidash!
And Blaine's level limit is 50! Nice! What's my Typhlosion's level again? 63...

    Oh... bugger...
I'm going to need to rethink this one...

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver

  17. So, Kanto will comprise of 7 type challenges. Why 7? Well, Blue has a more unique challenge as he is a type-less gym. We'll touch on that when we get there.

So, let's theory build for the upcoming gyms.

Brock - Rhydon is probably my best bet here. Level limit is 44, and I can trade my existing Dragonair if it is female. I should check that.
And I just remembered Rhydon can learn surf!

Misty - Lapras can be used again, but I should probably pick up Lanturn, because a Water/Electric will make quick work of her. Level limit 47.

Surge - Jolteon might be a worthwhile pick here, either that or Electabuzz. Both can learn moves outside the default electric moves. Magneton can also make a return. Level limit 46.

Eirika - Grass types are a bit of a pain. Mostly because I don't like them that much. If I had Meganium, this would be easy, but alas. I'll probably main Victreebell or Jumpluff? Like Surge, level limit is 46.

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver

  18. So, when it comes to Pokemon, I am a card carrying Fire-Type starter. Every generation, without fail I pick the fire starter.

    Charmander, love him, he's adorable.

    Cyndaquil, great! Cute little bean.

Torchic, amazing! Blaziken is great! Absolute boss of a final form.

Chimchar.... Wait... We did Fire Fighting already... But this time he is monkey, sure.

Tepig. Guys. Come on. We did this for two generations straight.

Fennekin, Fennekin broke the cycle kept me type loyal. Not only is he a little Fokko, but Fire Psychic? Yes please!

Litten. Ooooh, you zigged where I thought you would zag. I love Incineroar, especially in Smash. So much personality and great inspiration!

Scorbunny. You almost did it again! But pure Fire type, you had me worried there.

Fuecoco. Fuecoco is a pokemon I would invade a small micro-nation for, at their bequest.

Why am I talking about Fire mons? Well, this does tie into my current Silver run... And a minor snag I have hit...

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver

  19. So, I should have made this a blow by blow reporting on my Johto adventures.

Sadly, when I am in the zone and making progress, I forget to talk screenshots and stuff.

This very much being the case with Clair and the Elite 4, Clair being a real pain as she has 3 Dragonairs with a priority to use Thunder Wave.

Paralysis cure berries will only save you a turn. Unless she misses with Thunder Wave.
But they all seem to also be packing either Dragon Breath or Ice Beam... Wish I had that move myself.

Twister can flinch, so at least it has that going for it.

Let's not forget that she also has a level 40 Kingdra. A tanky blighter who packs a punch.

I am glad for these achievements I could use items. I was constantly reviving things to ensure I only used Dragon type Pokemon to beat her.

My mind is now set on the Kanto gyms. Which opens a few new problems. But at least the gyms will require more common Pokemon types.

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver #RetroAchievements

  20. Guess what time it is, folks!

    It's Lapras catching time!

Lapras, you are coming with me, and we are going to go dunk on a really underwhelming Ice Gym Leader. That sounds like fun, right?

In Gen 2, Lapras can be found in the 2nd basement floor of Union Cave on Friday. Surf is required to get to this floor and also to where Lapras spawns.

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver #GameboyColor

  21. So, I remember doing this as a kid, completing the Unown Dex, mostly because I sunk so much time into Pokemon Silver.

Catching them all really is just a case of bragging rights, I thought you also got a certificate that you could print via the Gameboy printer. Not that it matters too much, having this achievement is enough to prove I have done it.

But yeah. The only thing I never did on Pokemon Silver was completing the Pokedex, which is definitely an end goal for me. Though it should be noted, when I say complete it, it will be as complete as you can make it without trading.
I even had the legendary Dogs... My stumbling point was Tyranitar and the roaming Kanto legendary bird.
This time, I am taking no prisoners.

    #Pokemon #PokemonSilver #GameBoyColor #RetroAchievements

  22. Lance, I think doing that would probably constitute an international crime of sorts...

It is wild to think this NPC wasn't reduced to chunky salsa after being hit with a Hyper Beam from one of Lance's Dragonites.

I think this scene was certainly a justifying factor in why you see scenes of people attacking other people with Pokemon in some of the more edgy Pokemon rom hacks.

  23. Was supposed to post this last night.

    His name is WHAT?!

This was a trainer in Chuck's gym, if you were wondering where this poor soul was located.

I almost missed this as I have a keybind I can hold to initiate the emulators turbo mode. It has made some of the grinding for the achievements significantly more bearable.

  26. Another fake pirate translation of Silver. This time it's masquerading as Pikachu Inc. but it's actually just HC Translations again. They even mimicked the title style which is interesting.

Although nothing super super exciting, it is still interesting nonetheless. Is it possible the people who made this made the fake Vida Translations Silver as well?

It's also too bad that I'm unable to extract it off the multicart it came on.
