So, I think for this week's #VGMWednesday I am contractually obligated to talk about something from Gen 2 #Pokemon
With this in mind, how could I possibly pick just one track from this generation of Pokemon?! I certainly couldn't cop out a pick a track from the Kanto region, could I?
Going through the OST was a bit of a weird experience because as I was going through the battle music, I came to the conclusion I didn't actually like it that much. Perhaps it is more the Gameboy's sound capabilities doing the tracks a disservice.
Therefore, the thought process was, what track just resonated with me the most, and made me feel I was in Johto.
I settled on the Azalea town and Blackthorn city theme. I can't put my finger on it, but this just hit my nostalgia just right, and I love it so much.
This track comes across quite quaint and peaceful, which I think captures Johto as a region quite nicely. -

Well I've now defeated Lance, but I do intend to go through Kanto at some point. I'm not sure if it'll be immediately, I kind of want to take a break from trying to get through an RPG (even one as familiar and documented as Pokemon) in a language I cannot read, let alone one that is undocumented due it being an unofficial translation.
At least as far as I've seen, everything has been normal apart from being able to teach Sudowoodo Fly which is amazing. It's not been used for battling all too much but the flying tree has been my mascot for this playthrough.
That's enough Pokemon monster emerald 2008 for the time being.

Someone please explain why the hell Sudowoodo can learn Fly in this translation hack but Farfetch'd can't?? I guess I'm flying around on the back of a tree now.
EDIT: To clarify an error I made, turns out Farfetch'd did learn Fly but somehow I didn't notice. This doesn't change the fact that Sudowoodo somehow got the ability to fly in the bootleg.

So the hack I'm playing seems to be limited to two characters per Pokemon name due to screen space which certainly makes everything a challenge.
That being said, I'd like to bring your attention to two of my favorite Pokemon, Espeon and Umbreon and their bootleg names.
Espeon is 天天 which translates to "everyday", but I'm assuming it's meant to play off of 白天 which is "daytime".
However Umbreon appears to be 雷鸟 which translates to "thunder bird". I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean, it doesn't sound like the English or Japanese names. It's clearly not a bird (and if you know the games it's a Dark type). Is this supposed to be a direct reference to a Thunderbird? I have no clue.

The Quick Claw apparently translates as 灼灼灼, which according to Google Translate means "Burning". Maybe it's a text representation of flame car decals.

A lot of numbers in this translation hack use the original numbers which look tiny next to the larger Chinese characters. I haven't been paying special attention, but it looks like exclamation marks after Chinese characters are larger and after numbers are the normal sized ones.
Also I'm not sure why they put an exclamation mark after Magnitude?

Been continuing to play Pokemon monster emerald 2008. There isn't as much fuckery with the names glitching, but there is still some. Context: I have not nicknamed any of my Pokemon at all.
For example, the first character in your first Pokemon's name when the party is full gets replaced with a "?" in the party menu (though I've seen it not happen while switching out after knocking an opponent's Pokemon out).
Another example on this same screen is that Quilava's second character in his name is usually this weird set of vertical lines. Why? I don't know.
Sidenote: I've never caught a Ditto in Gen 2 since I never try completing the Pokedex in the older games and it's relative rarity. It's got a unique sprite (unsurprisingly) and honestly it's kinda goofy.

I purchased this Chinese copy of Pokemon Gold with the intent to play through it similarly to Yellow.
However, the ROM doesn't work in any emulator I've tried (including hhugboy) and won't work on my Everdrive either. It also won't hold a save (which would be pretty unreliable given it's apparent age anyways) so that's another idea dead in the water for now.
However I'd still like to point out some very early stuff:
The title screen is hilarious because they neglected to removed some pixels from the Japanese title. But hey, recycling 金 is a great idea since it means Gold in both languages. Problem is that it only draws more attention to how bare bones your translated title is.
You're able to access the naming screen... but you're really really limited.

Last year, a friend gave me this awesome Lugia card from the Japanese Neo Genesis set while we were having a drink at a local coffee shop. It was a card I always remember wanting when I first saw it online in the early 2000s, hoping that someday i'd finally own it, but I never pulled my own card from any booster packs.
Originally I declined it, telling him it was far too generous, but after about twenty minutes, and knowing that I may never see one again, I asked him if he was sure about giving it to me. He handed it over, and the rest is history. It was a generous gift!
