There IS a technical labor cost associated with hosting, but adding a social media server to an existing stack of web applications hasn't added a lot to my technical burden, so far.

When you run out of disk space or RAM, it makes very little difference whether the offender was Misskey or Gitea or Wordpress.

If that kind of work sounds unpleasant to you, then you probably are in the market for "managed hosting", which I'll address in another post.

The other aspect of administration is dealing with people: other moderators, administrators of other sites, and decisions about federation with other instances. For me, I would fold those tasks in under "moderation".

And that burden would not go away if I switched to managed hosting.

Well. Isn't that a thing?

I'm looking at the feature set of Nextcloud, and it's looking like it actually can be set up to do just about everything I was hoping to use ResourceSpace for, and with less hassle to setup, and it's able to effectively replace the VCS role, as well (sort of -- it replaces what I would have practically got out of using Git as production VCS, and again with less hassle):

I can use it as a DAMS, by either browsing the virtual filesystem, or by searching for tags, which I can apply, even to read-only interfaces. I can share a filesystem on the server as "external storage", and that storage can be on an s3fs volume, which actually stores the files as S3-compatible object storage objects.

I can preview files using "apps" within my browser. And this all worked more smoothly.

I can also set up object storage for Nextcloud's primary, storage, but I'm starting to think the external storage option is better, because it uses a filesystem that can be read by other applications.

Of course, it'll take time to build up the tags, but I can get started on it.

@Mr_n_wood 10 past 1 & a staggering amount of food outside … And the freezer did not really need defrosting or cleaning, but def. sorting. Now time for a break before I tend to the repacking of some & make some kind of list. Had plans for making samosas, but find there is absolutely no need … I can also reduce my shopping list to nothing …
