POWER9's NX-GZIP hardware compression engine gives you zlib-compatible acceleration via LD_PRELOAD — no kernel rebuild, no recompilation.
On my Talos II I'm seeing 17–29× speedups for random/compressible data, and 5× wall-time reduction for mksquashfs with 36× less CPU. New post with setup steps and benchmarks:

💻 Hello Old Friend, Talos II 💻
This was my first IBM POWER9 system, acquired in 2020 and built for home/desk use. Dual socket SMT4 Sforza, 144 threads, 256-512GB RAM, various storage/net/accelerators over the years. [1]
As expected, I fell in love and acquired four IBM Power System L922-2U [2], which are presently in the colo awaiting network rebuild (remote hands this time).
The Talos II has served a variety of purposes, with most of its time running FreeBSD PPC64le (&a bit of PPC64be for fun). Sometimes also Linux, back when I was tearing into qemu code for compiler optimization hypothesis testing, RTX GPU passthrough, +validating assumptions about qemu on P9/le handling amd64 & arm64 emulation.
So, out of storage! Into the rack! New user accounts! But first it needs updated OS drives (the 3x 64GB SATADOM in Raid-Z1 need to be repurposed), and a NIC (25G-DP CX-5 or X710-DA4).

New machines to test with #gentoo #ppc64le #ultrasparc #t1

#darktable runs on my #power9 machine natively now! woohoo!

Checking on shipments before starting the workday to see if the newly acquired (fourth) LC922 is transiting to the colo… and yes, it's true #iLoveIBM!
Still pending OS storage decisions before supply chain:
- remain standardized on dual S4510 / PM863a
- alt standard w/ dual SATADOM for EFI boot handoff to dual NVMe
- introduced new standard of dual 2TB P3608 Optanes
- disregard OS drives and use iSCSI boot
- other ideas… 🙇🏼♀️ -
It looks like #ppc64le support for Ring is right around the corner! https://github.com/briansmith/ring/pull/1057#issuecomment-1736512131 #RustLang #cryptography

Most valuable thing in #ppc64le #guix for me now would be having a working #rust package
Many packages (indirectly) got dependent on rust over time and those can't be upgraded anymore, and the list is getting larger by the day.The actual error is in building #mrustc and is low level enough that it is way out of my league.

CW: Free software implementation of counter strike, called #freecs, is being developed using the #fteqw engine
#ppc64 #ppc64le #counter #strike #counterstrike #freecs #fteqw #quake
As the title says, a free software implementation fo counter strike is on the way thanks to #eukara. I’ve been testing it on a #ppc64le machine and it works without issues (source compilation is necessary, though).
Even though freecs is on a playable state, there are a lack of servers and players.
They have an IRC channel on freenode (#freecs).
Please, consider giving your support to the project:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/freecs-1-5/
Thank you so much for reading and spread the word! :-)
