  1. Wrens, tanagers, cardinals, and other small passerines flap about in @KateShaw 's wonderful new episode. Even the extinct New Zealand Wren comes in. The family Troglodytidae is mentioned, but secret dark undergound empire of subterranean wrens is not.

  2. How evolution has optimized the magnetic sensor in birds

Adaptive #evolution and loss of a putative magnetoreceptor in #passerines: Corinna Langebrake et al. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

"there have been significant evolutionary changes in the gene for the protein #cryptochrome 4 and certain groups of #birds have lost it entirely. This is indicative of adaptation to varying environmental conditions and supports the theory that cryptochrome 4 functions as a sensor protein."

  3. what if more than half of dinosaur species during the Cretaceous were little fluffy chirpy tree-dwelling birds just like today?

Is it even possible to construct a good argument that this is unlikely, given that such small tree-dwelling birds are unlikely to be preserved?

  6. Riddle:

With eagle's beak and raptor feet,
I’m ruthless when it’s time to eat.
I wear a black mask on my eyes.
My victims meet their grim demise
On pointed barb or thorny spike.
    The mockingbird’s my lookalike,
Though we are not at all the same.
And butcher is my family name.

    What am I?

  7. Riddle:

My mate and I, we look the same
And dwell in holes by family name.
    Attested in Old Pliny’s words,
I won the title, “King of Birds”
For flying higher than the Eagle.
    My methods weren’t exactly legal:
I hid myself, a tiny thing,
Within the plumage of his wing.

    What am I?

  8. Redwing Blackbirds. An interesting, engaging and lengthy interaction between what I'm assuming is a fledged juvenile (f.) and its mother (r.). I'm also assuming the juvie was eliciting a feeding response from mom, who was essentially telling junior to go out and get a job!

  9. Not a great shot, I had to denoise and crop the hell out of it, but at least you can kind of make out the tell-tale hot orange-pink feet on this Blackpoll Warbler, a first for me. But, these warblers' legs aren't the only cool thing about them. For one thing, its call is so high-pitched as to be barely audible to the human ear. For another, as tiny as it is, it migrates over 1,800 miles from northern Canada to its winter digs in South America. Not so cool is the fact that its population has declined by about 80% during the past 40 years, largely due to the fossil fuel and other extractive industries devastating its nesting habitat in the boreal north.

  10. I guess this has been my week for flycatchers. Another of the Tyrannidae, this one is a Great Crested Flycatcher, one of the more colorful members of the group. They inhabit open woods and edge habitats around woodlands. These flycatchers are not partial in terms of where they catch their insect prey, and they will also eat berries.
