If I get in the mood for some tech hacking, I am considering putting #OpenWRT on my old unused #Netgear #Orbi units.
When we moved into this house, the cable company installed Plume pods for the mesh wifi. I thought I would wait until they left and put my Orbis in but to my shock, I liked the Plumes.
Because this is a big house, even with three Plume pods there are dead spots. I'm trying to figure out how to get the most bang out of these old Orbis. I have one base station and two satellites. The Plumes are very smart about the ethernet ports. If you plug in an uplink, the pod becomes a repeater. If it has no uplink, the pod becomes a bridge adapter.
The RBW30 satellites have no Ethernet ports so I can't use them as bridges. I wonder if there is some mode they can go in to where they will participate with the Plume mesh. Can OpenWRT even do that? This is a big research topic on which I have a very shaky understanding. Netgear loves telling me how EOL this is so I lose nothing but farting around with them. It just remains to be seen if or how they can be useful.

Netgear letting me know that security vulnerabilities in the #orbi router I bought 4 years ago are now on me, because they aren’t providing any more updates. A few weeks ago, before some secret handshake w the Trump idiots in charge, they weren’t going to be allowed to sell routers at all in the US. Now they’re actively encouraging exploits 🤷♂️

Seriously considering replacing my #Orbi and #Arlo setup with #unifi - The pro-level networking, ability to create multiple vlans, and the unified networking and camera infrastructure seems worth the cost.
Now if i could just figure out where to pull all that CAT-6 cable I need to run...

My #Orbi app on the iPhone upgraded last week to 2.42.1, and I was able to use this to upgrade to latest firmware on my base station.
However, the kebab menu where the “upgrade firmware” command appears does not exist for the satellite! I swear it used to be there.
Anyone else having this issue?

Ce 12 juillet 2024, le dépôt institutionnel #ORBi a dépassé les 100 000 publications en #accèsouvert. Ce succès témoigne de l'engagement de @UniversitedeLiege envers la diffusion libre et gratuite des connaissances scientifiques.
Le mois dernier, plus de 500 chercheurs ont déposé 1 042 publications. Parmi celles-ci, 76% contiennent un texte intégral et 76% sont en accès ouvert.

I don't know why, but Mastodon has a lot of tech savvy people. This is for the people who follow me with a tech background.
I get exhausted by the never ending fight against the RW in politics & media. Even wins don't feel like wins.
Solving a technical problem clears my head & in the end I have the satisfaction of a solution.
I just apent 4 days connecting a #Orbi SXR30 router to a Sxs30 mesh satellite using an ethernet backhaul. I FINALLY got it working! Thanks to folks in 5 different forums.
