My MacBook started complaining about the ip address being in use, which is odd because it’s a static dhcp lease. But no, there’s clearly an ARP reply coming in and MacBook rejects dhcp.
Stop 1: mikrotik/unifi know nothing about the offending mac.
Stop 2: WiFi AP says it’s coming from eth upstream based on tcpdump
Stop 3: can’t tcpdump the switch but it’s mac table has no mention of the offending macHuh.
Reading closer, reply comes on vlan 1. But I don’t have vlan 1!
Stop 4: apparently there is a hidden vlan 1 on unifi switch and it has the offending mac. Wtf unifi? It came from port 7 - the other AP
Stop 5: the other AP… generates the offending packet. So let me get this straight: something in unifi leaks from vlan 50 to vlan 1 (and I don’t even have vlan 1!) where unifi AP hallucinates a reply and then it leaks all the way to vlan 50 and fuck up my MacBook’s dhcp.
I should become a sheep farmer…

Hey #network nerds. I've got a #Unifi Dream Machine behind my Xfinity modem. I need to enable a port forward for Plex, but it doesn't seem to work unless I turn on bridge mode on the modem. But if I do that, it seems to negatively impact my speeds (a lot, down to 100Mbps up/30 down, from 1G/1G). So I've enabled DMZ on the modem for my router's internal IP address (only device connected to the modem). Since the UDM is designed to be directly connected to the net anyway, it feels like using DMZ is a non-issue. Am I understanding that correctly? TIA

Ok, geeked again now that some Aliexpress parts arrived.
Have added a 10Gb SFP in the Lenovo P330 that's my Ubuntu Server Homelab. It was easier to go straight to SPF using a PCIe riser card; then mess around with 2.5Gb ethernet in this device. The fact my office switch had a 10Gb SFP port unused... it made me say why not :)
Now to have fun learning and documenting using a Bonding interface, to make the SFP primary, with the ethernet as backup.

After two weeks of faffing around - I used an old #Unifi UAP (POE module courtesy of @Ryanteck ) to provide my own SSID and I can finally remote into an old #RaspberryPi 2 using the nice Raspberry Connect facility, and remote reboot it when I've made changes to the website it displays :-)

Now running #UniFi OS Server with Fedora #CoreOS on #Proxmox. Just one "terraform apply" command, from VM creation to service running. OS and Unifi Server are both auto-updating with zero manual maintenance.
Thanks to @moreentropy!

I think it's getting to the point I should be seriously considering a real, proper, big boy rack. (Writing this up makes me think a Homelab tour video is in order).
Top row - Unifi UCG Fiber Gateway with WAF110 + Anker USB-C power station
Row 2 - PDU
Row 3 - 3x m90q in proxmox cluster with 64gb RAM each (from the before times) plus 3x 1tb nvme ceph cluster each node has a sfp+ NIC, PiKVM with 4 port switcher (love this thing)
Row 4 - Unifi 10 gig agg
Row 5 - Patch
Row 6 - USW 48 Pro Max (screamin' FB marketplace deal, such an awesome switch)
Row 7 - Unifi NVR
Row 8 - Zimaboard (running DNS, my network VIP, a few other core services split in HA with a Pi5 upstairs), Framework desktop as my primary dev workstation all via SSH.#selfhosting #selfhosted #proxmox #unifi #cluster
Out of shot, my NAS which I document here - https://perfectmediaserver.com/01-overview/alexs-example-builds/

At the mall food court. Kids are off "exploring" on their own while I mooch off the Tropical Smoothies wifi and teleport to the home network via the #Unifi travel router.

@RockyC Nice stack (virtually and physically)! Wondering which of those two NAS devices is Wrecker and which is Crosshair!
My homelab is 100% #Synology + #unifi from hw standpoint. Running about 90 #containers for all kinds of things among 5 current devices, with 2 more coming within a months time.
Also have one HP just as you for Prox testing but thats about it.

The walls at my current place are killing me. Well, they're killing the #ZigBee signal strength. Some of them are 50 cm thick. Some distant #Hue switches and lights can be very laggy.
I decided to move the bridge closer to the geographical center of the apartment. And why not upgrade at the same time?Ordered a Hue Bridge Pro and a PoE splitter for it. Will power it from a #UniFi #PoE Switch. Time to make things work properly =)

It's always DNS, right? If someone experiencing some strange issues with ubuntu, maybe this toot is for you.
tl;dr: switch from systemd-resolved to resolvconf.
I thought, the saying from the beginning was just something from the "old days". No DNS Problems in 2024 anymore, right? But Ubuntu taught me different.
Ubuntu is using systemd-resolved since 20.04 (if I'm correct). But I was shocked, when I was looking at my uptime kuma Container on a Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Host. It was constantly failing. Sometimes 3 services at the same time, sometimes just 1 service a day. One Check suddenly failed. 60 seconds later, the next check, switched back to green again. But all fails had the same error message: "getaddrinfo ENOTFOUND domain.com". Doesn't matter if they were internal domains or external. Sometimes some of them just failed.
I thought it could be an old Firewall Applience that were running at like 120% system utilization and were serving DHCP and (with this) internal DNS. But no. Not even high latencies from that Firewall. Then I thought it might be AdGuard (in a Docker Container). So I switched to PiHole. But the problems were still the same.
Then I turned on debug logs of systemd-resolved and found out that sometimes it was switching to the secondary DNS Server for whatever reason and just attaching the search domain to the following requests:
1. AAAA of demodomain.com
--> no answer (because only A were available)
2. A of demodomain.com
--> somehow failed, systemd-resolved switched to second DNS (debug log of systemd-resolved is hard to read, not sure why it somehow failed)
3. AAAA of demodomain.com.local
--> it just attached the searchdomain of the system to the domain which now resulting in errors from all following DNS ServerAfter another round of wrong requests it suddenly get back his head. But in the meantime, uptime kuma already failed.
The solution in my case: switch "back" to resolvconf package on Ubuntu. Which comes to at least one downside: it seems to not have an interface to netplan and/or networkmanager (which leads to manual creating and managing of resolv.conf, not via DHCP, bummer). But after I switched: Everything is working fine and without any problems since days.
"We" also have an open bug report since 3 years: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/21123
It's not exactly the same issue, but I think the root cause is connected somehow: it seems to be a problem of IPv6.
But a) I need (or better: want) IPv6 in my case/that network and b) WTF? How can this be a good solution to turn off IPv6 (https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/21123#issuecomment-2028976737)? Not to mention that we still need a solution for Post-IPv4.By the way: If you still experiencing DNS issues inside Docker Container, maybe Alpine could be another issue: https://martinheinz.dev/blog/92
