I got frustrated for the last time with website rendering and UI in Safari, and so in two days this week, I went through two browsers. First I went to Opera, based on using it decades ago, but it was clunky. Then I remember hearing about Vivaldi Browser and wow, I love it! Took hours of work to make these two transitions, but I'm glad I did.

Classic #OperaBrowser had an interesting approach: since it couldn't guarantee, despite all efforts, perfect compatibility with websites that weren't designed around web standards but “for specific browsers”, it provided a menu option to open in a different browser any page you were in. I don't think I've seen such a feature in any other browser, but I think it's actually the simplest solution to the diverging paths for the two webs.

Under this analysis, browsers like @Vivaldi are in a very precarious situation: on the one hand, #VivaldiBrowser is being developed under what is arguably a “web of documents” mindset, and in fact more in general as a “Swiss knife of the Internet”, similarly to classic #OperaBrowser (I've already written about this at length). On the other hand, its reliance on the #Google-controlled #Blink engine that is designed for the “web of apps” cripples it in its efforts:

前の Neon は興奮したけど。Aiブラウザの #OperaNeon は正直ぜんぜんワクワクしない。

結局生成AIの汎用度が高いため。様々な作業を生成AIにぶん投げることになるけど。Opera Neon に限らず「AI ブラウザ」を名乗るものは、いちいちその命令をテキストで入力しないといけない。それって結構面倒だと思うけどなぁ〜。

Microsoft had reasons for this: at first it was because they didn't “get” the Internet, later on it was because it's the only way they had to (attempt to) control it. They did all they could to cripple it: remember when #OperaSoftware released a “Bork” edition of their of the #OperaBrowser in response to #Microsoft serving them intentionally broken CSS?

Now imagine what the Internet would have been like if Opera, @mozilla and few others hadn't held their ground.

I don't think people appreciate the role that #OperaSoftware played in fostering the #OpenWeb and #IndieWeb during the first #browserWar (when the #OperaBrowser was still built on their proprietary #Presto engine), and a fortiori the role it had in their demise (when they switched to being “just another #WebKit/‌#Blink skin”), despite their browser never even reaching a 3% market share.

Uma coisa que a Opera poderia fazer é centralizar a funcionalidade de todos os seus navegadores em um só, tem umas funcionalidades do Opera GX que poderia ter na versão padrão e por ai vai.

I’m tinkering with the design of my blog, because of course I am. And I took the opportunity to do a couple of silly/cool/both things: I got rid of flexbox and re-implemented color variables in #Sass (so, pre-CSS3 pure-ish #CSS, basically).

So now it looks great on #PSVita. What, you don’t check how your sites look on Vita? Your loss.

(I don’t have the energy to figure out what #OperaBrowser monstrosity is on #Nintendo3DS.)

I kinda love-hate this.

As a long running #Firefox user that eschewed other browsers because Firefox just worked for me, I tried an experiment of using #UnGoogledChromium, #OperaBrowser, and #Vivaldi

UngoogledChromium, coupled with a handful of standard extensions is fantastic - even better than my Mozilla experience. Hats off to the Ungoogled Chromium contributors.

Opera lasted about a minute given I can only hide the #AI option, not delete and disable it.

I think I'm switching browsers...

I feel the need to point out that with this update, Opera went to Chromium "124.0.6367.62"… yes you read that right ".62" which is a build long before both recent 0-day exploits (it is from last month).

To be clear, Opera is not faster at responding to the CVE-2024-4761 0-day than Edge or Brave (or Chrome and Vivaldi obviously), it is much, much slower. Unless they have backported security fixes and their Changelog gives no indication of that https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/changelog-for-110/ , they are missing all of the following security improvements
