  1. Good #STEM session with my gang of young hoodlums today learning #rocket design with #opensource #OpenRocket. They followed along a basic rocket recipe and then were challenged in pairs to redesign the airframe with the same motor optimising for altitude. They all smashed it!

  2. 🚀 Oh, joy! Another gloriously convoluted #simulator where rocket science becomes everyone’s hobby... because clearly, everyone needs 50 variables to launch a bottle rocket. 🤓💥 If you ever wanted to spend hours in a user manual while dreaming of virtual flight, #OpenRocket is the mind-numbing way to go! 📚✨

  7. For anyone who has no idea what I'm talking about but is interested anyway, almost 3 years ago I starting trying to design from scratch 3D printed model rockets to carry a small video camera and altitude logger while remaining as small and light a possible.

I spent quite a bit of time fiddling around in FreeCAD and OpenRocket and 3D printing prototype parts trying to come up with something that could carry the payload while being both light enough to fly well and tough enough to survive the flight. Eventually this resulted in a series of lights in late 2022, and here are the results: youtube.com/watch?v=s4I2bufpGQc

  8. Had a great session last night teaching #rocket design to 11 interested people of all ages! Showing off #opensource tools #Openrocket and the fabulous @FreeCAD rocket workbench. #FreeCAD

  9. Just had my talk confirmed for #fosdem in the new year... of course it's all things #opensource #rocketry with heavy lashings of #freecad and #openrocket :) You can preview the talk

  10. Just in case no one told you, the new version of #OpenRocket has an .OBJ export feature.

    Enjoy your life more now.

  11. I've just blogged about @FreeCAD rocketry workbench and how beautifully interoperable it is in many ways with the equally fabulous #openrocket If you are into #rocketry there are so many unique and interesting workflows for part creation that I hint at in this blog!

  15. Well, spent the morning messing about in #OpenRocket, designing a scratch built #Rocket that is modular and capable of acting as a test bed for the flight computer. Fin can and body couplers will be 3d printed, allowing me to modify the performance of the rocket very easily in the field.
First test flight looking at 2xC11-5s to an altitude of ~230ft.
Deadline to have this built and ready to fly in the 28th of Jan... What could go wrong...

  16. OpenRocket approves! Seems I guessed well with the tail fin size, and the rocket should be stable enough to keep pointy end up, flamey end down. According to the simulations a C6-3 motor is just about right, with C6-5 being usable too.

  17. About time I tooted about this hobby project. I've been designing and 3D printing my own small model rockets with on board video cameras, youtu.be/s4I2bufpGQc

They're all designed from scratch using #FreeCAD and #OpenRocket, & printed on my #Prusa Mini+ in PETG. The onboard camera is a RunCam Split 3 Lite, and I've also put a logging altimeter in there using some #Adafruit parts and a few lines of #CircuitPython.
