It was a rocket day in Minnesota... I have been mentoring the 12 year old son of a friend for almost 8 years, today he flew his rocket on an H motor to 2400 ft, at over 450 mph. This earned him the cerification level 1 and he is now allowed to fly high power rockets.

Between my drive up to the Hudson Valley on Monday, and home again this afternoon, I made exactly 2.5 simplex contacts on 146.52, caught up on 2 episodes of #HamRadioWorkbench, and one episode of @therocketryshow
So overall I'd say not a bad commute😀

Building the #R2D2 flying model rocket. R2 drew first blood as I tried to whittle down some excess plastic with an E-Xacto knife.
The kit is from the 1970s and DAMN that plastic is tough! #ModelRocketry

We drove out to the Mojave desert to launch big rockets at Friends of Amateur Rocketry yesterday. We missed the protests but we did dedicate the pink and green one to the downfall of fascism. #ModelRocketry #Rockets

Hobby Goals for 2025:
Do more FT8 (current < 10 contacts)
More HF in general
Relearn CW
Permanent packet station
finish v4 of the @radiorocket
Get High Power Certified
Finish building the equipment racks/cabinets I started
get new mast up to raise the height of my VHF/UHF antennas (and get a 6 meter antenna back on the air)
Finish KJ7OMO repeater
Get an @nars repeater on the air
Launch a non-profit (been kicking it around for a couple years)
Mostly #HamRadio & #ModelRocketry stuff

Conditions at the moment are looking good for a launch tomorrow, so we’re lining up our stuff at the door to load in the car in the morning. Each of the kids picked out a rocket to launch and we’ll also launch Ponzu with our current “minimally viable” version 4 electronics, to test out the bits that are done so far.
We’ll set up the AREDN stuff too, which should let us send data via the mesh back home, where we can then push out some toots in your general direction.
-
We are tentatively planning to launch some rockets this coming Sunday - each kiddo will probably launch one or 2 of theirs, and if I can sort out a couple details, we’ll use Ponzu to do a first flight test on our v4 electronics which aren’t done, but are in what could be considered a “minimally viable” state if I can sort out a couple things this week for the on-board antenna.
We should also be able to push out some toots if things are moving smoothly 😏

Was feeling mostly better by this afternoon, so while I didn’t get parts for the vacuum chamber I tooted about earlier, I did do this….
Gotta love a good hack.
-
So - I’m teaming up with my eldest, and we’re setting up a dedicated shop because they’d like to sell some things they designed as well - all the ham radio stuff I have in my current shop will end up moving there, but while we’re setting up the new home, I’d be open to suggestions for #HamRadio or #ModelRocketry or just about any other products that would be a good fit, knowing that the proceeds go to our passion projects.

Early peek at the new brains for version 4 of the radio-rocket!
Version 3 played a Rick Roll when booting up, but for Quadratus, the 12yo wanted Mario.
This helps us know that’s turned on - since this is inside the rocket, it’s hard to tell if it’s turned on without an audio indication of sorts
-
@emma (or any other #ModelRocketry folx) - I’ve seen you talk about club launches more here than anyone else - I’ve never participated in a club launch before so don’t have any context - in an average and worst case scenario, how long might your rocket sit on the pad before it’s your turn to launch? (Trying to nail down the optimum battery size for my electronics payloads projects, but don’t know how much wait time to account for)
-
Some of the new bits came!

@StefanEJones
Ouch! I've had that happen - possibly it still ascending when the ejection went off? -
I started an American Rocketry Challenge team at my school this year. The students built 2 rockets. We went out to test them yesterday. We had an ejection charge failure that destroyed one rocket but the 2nd one worked very well. We'll go tinker with these (and rebuild) and do our qualifying flights in a month. #ModelRocketry #ModelRocket #maker

The parade of unfinished #ModelRocketry projects continues...but I am really trying to get this one ready to fly two weeks from today. This is an upscale of an #Estes Torellian Invader, a kit from the 80s, made out of a Super Neon XL kit. I got the fins cut and sanded this morning and just glued the first one on. 10 fins in all.
My Torellian Invader is the only finished rocket I built as a kid that I still have today. :)
-
Did some #rocketry today with the club. Went 5 for 5 on flights. No long walks. No broken anything. Great day of flying.
Upscale #estesrockets Nike-X on an Aerotech G76 Mojave Green to ~1300'
Sorcerer's Apprentice on an Estes D12-5 to 750'
Der Big Red Max on an Aerotech F20-4 White Lightning to 750'
Skyracha - a 4" diameter upscale Big Daddy on an Aerotech H128 White Lightning to 1000'Not pictured; Normal Big Daddy on an Aerotech F39 Blue Thunder to about 800'. Too quick off the rail to get a good shot.

Good news! The application for a presentation about me was accepted for the next #QSOToday expo coming up in March!
-
I'm about halfway through my holiday break from work, and getting started on a new #rocketry project. This will be a (slightly nonstandard) LOC Forte and will be a testbed for the new radio-controlled gliding parachute system from Apogee Components. I'd like to eventually make an autonomously homing system out of it (as I think Apogee originally intended this product to be) but that's a very complex project further down the road.
-
OpenRocket approves! Seems I guessed well with the tail fin size, and the rocket should be stable enough to keep pointy end up, flamey end down. According to the simulations a C6-3 motor is just about right, with C6-5 being usable too.
-
It's not a bad likeness, I think. Apart from the fins. I need the fins to keep pointy end up, flamey end down in the absence of vernier rockets and thrust vector control, though.
This is my scratch built 3D printed, flying model rocket semi-scale replica of the Gilmour Space Eris, with camera and altimeter.
Mechanically it is the most complicated thing I've made so far. 12 3D printed parts plus the electronics, parachute and shock cord. The electronics are pulled out of my previous rockets. I did put an extra slot in the avionics tray though, so I'd have space to add an inertial measurement unit later. The airframe goes together with bayonet couplings. Total mass (without motor) is 127g.
Hopefully I'll get to fly this soon, but the weather forecast isn't looking fantastic.
